One time my wife told me Vin Diesel and Verne Troyer were brothers and “Vin Diesel” was just a stage name and his name was actually Vin Troyer and the two brothers were named Vin and Verne.

I believed her.

Picked up this Double Battle eCard. Cyndaquil on the front and Typhlosion on the back so a nice addition. PSA grades these as well.

Picked up one of these Japanese promos for my Japanese promo collection. Anyone who has collected these knows the centering is infamously and appallingly inconsistent so I am really pleased with this one and it’s nice pretty borders. I’ll be cracking the slab and putting it in line with the unnumbered promos in my binder.

This card saw multiple releases without any variation between them. One was distributed in a “Fanbook”, another was distributed in the Best Song CD Collection, another still was distributed through CoroCoro, and none of these cards have any distinction between them. They are all identical prints. Some people claim you can identify the ones that were peeled versus the ones that came in the CD Collection by looking at the edge of the card but I have not found that to be true. I had some known copies from each distribution method and was never able to discern a difference in the cut no matter how closely I inspected. I got special equipment and everything.

The numerous distributions of this card makes it kind of difficult to group. It’s a CD Promo, a CoroCoro promo, and its original release was from a Fanbook alongside a Mewtwo. This Mewtwo is the same one released at the World Hobby Fair and CD Collection, so its original release from the Fanbook seems like the place to put it in the catalog. But that Mewtwo is also given the set symbol from Vending, grouping it with that series of cards and divorcing it from its Fanbook origin. To my knowledge, this is also the only card distributed through CoroCoro that is not considered part of the “CoroCoro” family of promos, presumably because it saw different releases previously. But I sort of dispute this, because if it was distributed through CoroCoro at all it is a CoroCoro promo.

So I have no idea where to stick this one.

As the label says, with the CD promos. I feel it really belongs with the set of CD promos. It completes the set and it’s one of the many famous sets.

Cheers!

Edit: nevermind, @pfm linked to a previous discussion thread which gives more clarity.

Definitely familiar with this topic, including this post: Super Energy Retrieval [Non-glossy] - Japanese Promo - #8 by nine

This is actually what I was referring to when I mentioned some people can tell the difference by looking at the cross section. But I just cannot discern any difference, especially not one as significant as depicted here. I peeled a Mew and a Mewtwo off a WHF sheet and then took the two out of the best song collection and I just cannot identify a difference.

The illustration seems like it should make sense. It’s exactly what I expected to see. But no amount of magnification and light helped me and the edges appeared identical on both sets of cards.

So I’m not sure what to do about that. According to Nine, Japanese collectors are able to tell the difference with this method. But no matter what I do I cannot. I even had a peer who is a jeweler look at the edges with his tools and he couldn’t tell a difference either.

I’m stumped on it or how to proceed because I cannot replicate the findings in that famous post. I have since just personally accepted that the cards cannot be discerned and to treat it as one release.
