Fam Arts & Crafts day
Very nice I always enjoy seeing some Pokemon spritework. Even better to do with the family!
It was a birthday present for a friend, whose favourite Pokémon happen to be Cubone and Dragonair. I’m not sure though who would win this fight…
That cubone looks almost ready to evolve. Great looking art!
Looks amazing again! Makes me want to try out some watercolor myself (though I’m sure it’ll come out awful). Just to give a heads-up, we do hold an annual art contest on these forums! I think it is generally around May-June time? But keep an eye out if you’re interested
Really nice piece. The pallet created by the water color feels so nostalgic. You have a great style. Thanks for sharing
Oh wow these take me back. Kinda wanna make some. Pretty cheap art supplies to get right? Tho pixel work has never been a strong point of mine… You made great selections on the colors and placement! Plus one of the classic evolution lines. Love em!
@Corylus is that done digitally or real watercolor? The texture of the old art style feels perfect. Hats off. I’d love any simple tips you can share, my attempts with it fail pretty quick and never get that level of vibrance. U use diff paper maybe?(tho I work mostly digital so I’m open to tips there if that’s the case too. Or is it physical with digital cleanup?)
Also, my money’s on cubone. One good bone club to the head and that boa constrictor becomes a pool noodle haha
@bbobrob Thanks for the kind words. If I have the time, I will consider participating. However I don’t know how busy I’ll be then.
@Whis_Cash Thank you for your kind words too. My illustrations are actual watercolours on real paper. I use different kind of paper brands with varying quality. For example I painted Bulbasaur on cheap paper where an entire block with 20 sheets just cost around 2-3€. Expensive paper is probably the better choice, as it’s glued to the block and resists therefore curling much better. If you want to go the traditional way, you have to be quick and patient at the same time. What I mean by that once you applied water to the area you want to colour, you have to add the paint as long as it’s wet, otherwise you won’t achieve the soft gradients Sugimori was known for. By patient you have to let the area properly dry, otherwise it will blend together with the others surrounding it and mix up the colours, which you probably don’t want. If you want to go even further, you can also draw the outlines with a g pen and a bottle of ink. You have to be very careful with that one as you can easily smear the lines as long as they’re still wet. While it might sound troublesome, I think the lines look much better than the ones done with fineliners. If you want to, I could upload some photo of the painting process.
Those, and that advice, is fantastic. I think you’ve given me plenty to work with so far haha.
A friend was a skilled artist with multiple mediums but not gifted at teaching. You def broke it down - and gave me more than enough - to start experimenting again. You basically addressed what I have problems with regarding the wetness. I def lacked patience letting it dry… always ended up with warped and runny messes. Yet I’m also am a shaky-handed ‘gunshy’ artist when it comes to making the executions but I am working on it. Drilling doing steady motions, and been doing some crafts that require a ‘measure/align/whatever a zillion times, execute once perfectly’ to try and get better. I ofc never expect art(much less an amatuers) to be ‘perfect’.
Greatly appreciate the advice and cant wait to see further one you’ve done. Vulpix and Dratini and absolutely amazing in this ones you’ve shown, and the ensemble ones are really fun.
also noticing the use of limited use of color and how much negative space/white in the pokemon there can be. That def was above my art pay-grade a few years ago.
I think I speak for everyone when I say I’m very impressed, thank you for sharing!
Can we get Corylus to draw a website banner?
That’s my progress of painting Evee. I ink the lines before I apply colour, but everyone has their own methods.
This video was a great advice for me and I hope it will help you as well.
I look forward to your results.
Ya! They’re called Perlers! Super affordable! My partner is the art major and the kid was super into it! I’m just here to hold purple beads and go “K THAT LOOKS SICKKKKK”
Very much appreciate the WIP pictures (we love those here!) and the video. I have no experience at all, so that video is super helpful. Love the other works you posted too! The Pidgey/Kakuna one especially (with the absolutely adorable chubby onlooker Pikachu).
I designed a card for Proxymon’s 2025 Illustrator Contest.
The final art will be popping out of the card similar to the Gold Stars. Regardless if I win, I’m looking forward to seeing my art on an actual physical card.
I don’t post my art online much, it feels good sharing it
I did not create this, I got it off Etsy 2 years ago for my other half for Valentines Day. Figured since it’s nearly the 14th I’d share it!
I love this. I wish there were more official cards that had this style of mew design. This is what I consider the “real” design of mew, basically how it looks in the First Movie.
This is amazing! I meant to reply a few days ago but looking at your work again, is just as impressive. You have some great talent, in an age of overwhelming digital art, this style stands out and is appreciated. Keep it up!
Very cute! Love the concept—you don’t see an aggressive Marill too often!
