Looks awesome! I like that you went with the more reptilian style instead of cutesy. Your watercolor looks clean and highlights very nicely.
these look awesome!! Great work. I especially love the Chien Pao
Very warm welcome to the forums @Corylus. Amazing to have you onboard and such a beautiful first post. I really like your inspired art style. It looks so innocent. Thanks for sharing your work and I hope you find other talented artists here who you can connect and also share your other works.
Cheers!
Welcome! This is beautiful. I’m very nostalgic for this style of Pokemon art.
Beautiful watercolor! I hope to see more of your work
Welcome to e4, @Corylus! Watercolor is my favorite medium. I am impressed by your Bulbasaur - it looks incredible and is definitely reminiscent of Sugimori’s work! Well done.
I was confused for 50 nanoseconds before reading the post and remembering the thread I clicked on. I thought this was some new sugimori art never before seen. So, I’d say you did well. This is an incredible first post. Welcome.
An absolutely beautiful first post! Your work definitely draws up feelings of the Ken Sugimori watercolors. Hope to see you share more of your work
Great first post @Corylus . Your Bulbasaur looks great. I hope you enjoy the forum
What a great way to introduce yourself! Welcome to the forum and I hope we get to see more of your skill soon!
Absolutely love it. As others have said, it genuinely looks like “lost” official art from back in the day. Looking forward to seeing more sometime!
Thank you very much for your kind words. Since my childhood I always wanted to paint like Sugimori and judging by your feedback, I got a step closer to that goal. Dratini here was my first artwork where the colour gradients looked the way I had imagined. I had to practice a lot, but it finally worked with that one.
This is beautiful too. Please keep sharing these!
Damn absolutely love those watercolors, like all the others here I could look at the other 149 (hearkening on it being gen 1 classic style of course) pokemon whenever, with a huge smile.
I’ve come to report today that I found a package at my door that I was not expecting, having bought nothing for quite some time, not one thing across any website. So seeing it had me wondering what the hell was going on. And, funny me (perhaps it was because I just got home from a job, always tired, not thinking as I normally would), I didn’t even look at the sender. Just set it down, noting I’d get back to it once I took care of a few things.
Then I just opened it. Inside was such a wonderful gift, completely surprised, remembering he mentioned it quite some time ago in a pm, long enough ago that when the first thing that popped out was a pack I was like who the hell is sending me this package, did I win a small lottery? No, I won a huge lottery. But it wasn’t random. It was the gifts of mr lyle. I’m positively beaming right now. This will stay on my coffee table and yes I will use this wonderfully glazed finish as a coaster, more so than my midcentury ones. Don’t care if the utility is difficult with regards to condensation as you might’ve suggested with your note. Don’t care! I will place it over the other. It’s aesthetic is too pure, too joyous, too happy to not.
Thanks so much man! This is incredible!!!
PS. I of course didn’t pull anything haha! 'Tis modern after all . If only they did it like the classic days where even the “non hits” were exciting. Nowadays they treat them like any other card. So it’s good I just care about the artist driven cards, where a common is as good as any other rarity to me. So in that regard, alas, nothing. The rare is the darkrai, which I admit is pretty solid artwork for sure. The slow already is insane so throwing a pack in there as a cherry on top just says how thoughtful of a person you are. Will be cherishing this gift man. Again, thank you so much! PPS. Sorry if you didn’t want me to share this. I’m sorry, but I am way too exciting about this to not immediately sit down and type this up. C’mon, people need to see this thing!
Everyone needs a surprise from time to time. I am sorry it took so long to send, I was hoping to add to the package and then finally said to hell with waiting, send it now (also I was cleaning up). I know you arent a big fan of modern but I figured you could try your luck but dang, these hit rates are rough.
As far as the craft goes, the next time I mess with clay I’ll keep it in mind to try making something more level . I think its a wonderful thing to display but you do you. Glad you enjoyed the gift.
@Corylus Another absolutely beautiful piece! It may have taken a lot of practice, but it certainly paid off!
@lyleberr Another great work by you too! Especially love the little bit of blue in the tail.
It was done at the same time as the others, just finally made it to its intended recipient.
Ah, I had a quick thought wondering if this was newly made. I thought I remembered you saying something about trying the clay/glazing because of having recently gotten access to a kiln or something (through a class?), but I didn’t feel like digging it up. Some good forethought then!
Oh wow, I meant to post this a while ago. This post has just been sitting in my drafts lol. Anyway I sold this card to a fellow E4 member (none other than @TheMarillFoundation!) and decided to send them a little gift along with the card.
I painted a little Marill sitting on the beach (acrylics and pastels)
I love it!!
This is also sitting in my drafts in my next collection thread update, it seems it’s taking me a long time to getting round to it haha.
Thanks again for the painting, it’s such a great piece to have in my Marill collection and was a wonderful surprise opening it!
