You rarely see this artist mentioned by name, but Nakaoka has done a lot of great cards.

Totodile was the one that immediately caught my eye too, a real beauty!

It’s right up there with it’s other counterparts so I think it suits it perfectly in this one instance:

Also learned an exciting fact, the artist who did my original profile picture - Monarobot - ended up being commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to do some Magic the Gathering card art:

I would die if she suddenly was able to work with Pokemon officially.

I like how the X curves around the spoon

The new Totodile reminds me of @ayoveer’s submission for the 2022 art contest. Similar concept, and both look great!

Hmmm. Steelix is a VERY hard creature to frame in a card. Full arts would do him much more justice, I think. Best steelix is definitely the Dream League CHR. But this one is pretty good. I think I like this more than the Aquapolis one, but not as much as the sandstorm steelix.

Oh dang! It certainly does!

Sandstorm is a good one. I think Steelix works really well with regular cards but he’s definitely unforgiving. Not much room for error.

I would round out my top 3 with the gorgeous TRR holo:

Maybe one of the reasons I like Steelix so much is that his cards are regularly not great, and when it does hit, it hits HARD! For me it really needs to convey the size of enormity of him. (Wailord is probly the only worse PkMn for this.) When I found a great illustration, I had it made into a crystal type. (IDK who illustrated my crystal steelix originally. It had been reposted by several people without clear credit, and then I modified it for the project.)

My top 3:

Like a diamond Basilisk, love it! There’s something about the brutal steel types and pit caves.

I like this Steelix as well, although Aquapolis is lights out.

It’s a nice illustration. I also feel like there’s also an increasing trend, which I’m not sure how I feel about, where pokemon are being shown in settings with people doing everyday things. Shopping, construction, delivery… maybe I’m just remembering a few examples, and it’s not a thing.

Definitely a trend lately since introducing and expanding the possibilities of full art cards. Even though in the moment it might seem like there are a lot of them coming out I ultimately welcome it. Anything to expand the world in which Pokemon inhabit it is a positive in my book, whether that’s the traditional trainers battling or Pokemon just being next to each other.

Since gen 1 in the games we’ve seen both wild and tamed Pokemon and for the longest time in the tcg there’s been little in showcasing them living among people and just existing with them day to day.
