Other than Yanma, the scenes have a deep depth of field - the distance from the front-most object to the rear-most object. The reaching hand, the jumping bird, and the stretching tentacle. It’s one compositional technique that can be used to give a sense of movement.

I know this one’s polarizing, but to me it will always be the defining Mewtwo artwork and one of the sickest oldschool artworks altogether.

I remember trading a cafeteria ice cream for one of these in high school. That ice cream was the shit in 2004!

Hasuno, the Thor/Heracles/Kratos of the TCG. At his best he rivals them all, Golem in particular has neverlooked this good:

A promising new artist of the TCG, Yuya Oka. I’m especially impressed by the Heatran, an ugly-pretty mon that it is hard to capture the right angle of, but this one is supreme. Only 14 cards so far, hopefully the first of many more to come.

Big fan of Bronzor/Bronzong and their Dark Phantasma cards looks awesome together. EGAWA’s take reminds me of the vending Ponyta with the open window and moody stone interior.

Oh that is awesome!!! That is some E4 art contest gold right there! If that was a submission, it would def get my vote. The proportions are perfect.

Not entirely sure how to describe Saitou…fresh? There is a straightforwardness, a sort of elegant simplicity to his illustrations, like an animated, lesser Sugimori. Sometimes boring or just mediocre, sometimes he is exactly what the doctor ordered. His pre-DPP catalogue is solid. In a world of the extremes of postures, proportions, colors and styles, he falls somewhere in the middle. A great staple in the rainbow of illustrators.

‘Fresh’ is a great description and ties up well with his own from the interview alongside Komiya:

Saitou: The sense of air and the amount of light are important. Those are two of the main elements to express that a Pokémon is there.
