Other than Yanma, the scenes have a deep depth of field - the distance from the front-most object to the rear-most object. The reaching hand, the jumping bird, and the stretching tentacle. It’s one compositional technique that can be used to give a sense of movement.
A promising new artist of the TCG, Yuya Oka. I’m especially impressed by the Heatran, an ugly-pretty mon that it is hard to capture the right angle of, but this one is supreme. Only 14 cards so far, hopefully the first of many more to come.
Big fan of Bronzor/Bronzong and their Dark Phantasma cards looks awesome together. EGAWA’s take reminds me of the vending Ponyta with the open window and moody stone interior.
Not entirely sure how to describe Saitou…fresh? There is a straightforwardness, a sort of elegant simplicity to his illustrations, like an animated, lesser Sugimori. Sometimes boring or just mediocre, sometimes he is exactly what the doctor ordered. His pre-DPP catalogue is solid. In a world of the extremes of postures, proportions, colors and styles, he falls somewhere in the middle. A great staple in the rainbow of illustrators.
