S4a Shiny Star V Megathread

I would love for them to do every Kanto starter. I can’t recall them ever doing all 3 in shiny form.

Me neither. It’s a different opinion and usually in this forum when you have those people kinda jumps from their seats., it’s a very legit concern IMO.

Preorders for this set have been happening since the beginning of August.

In the case of champions path, you can get ETBs on ebay for like $25 with free shipping over what you pay at walmart. This is the threshold for “getting fucked”? Turns out you’re not entitled to the hottest new set with limited supply at whatever arbitrary pricepoint you feel is correct. It also turns out you might not garner much sympathy for feeling this way in a luxury market.

Plz Shiny Chansey. Willing to pay the necessary bribes to make it
happen.

Right, let’s dig into this then.

  1. This set has been announced for months. Preorders have been available for months. I preordered my boxes on July 29th. If you aren’t following Pokemon news, don’t know where to get reliable Japanese preorders, or have to wait to see if a set literally named “Shiny Star V” will be hype, there’s only one person to blame.

  2. For something like Pokemon cards which can be printed at will and at massive numbers, “scalping” is simply a reaction to the market reality that people are willing to pay more for this item than the retail price, and demand is outstripping supply. The solution to this is always for Pokemon to put the “scalpers” out of business by making product accessible at retail price. Until they do that, the market will continue to dictate higher prices which will be capitalized on by people.

  3. Salty whiners always equate people buying something with scalping. There’s this mentality that “if I can’t preorder/buy this massively hyped set at Japanese retail on a whim with zero effort, it must be scalping.” Someone goes to one Target and can’t find Champions Path and posts a screed against “scalpers” when in reality people who are simply excited about the set have beat them to it.

And lets not forget to play the hits: Pokemon cards are luxury goods to which nobody is entitled, even “scalped” sets are always “accessible” you just have to pay a bit more, and we don’t get to dictate the correct way to buy childrens anime trading cards.

I’d vibe its a great shiny!

This hobby wouldn’t exist without flippers or scalpers

Pretending that there isn’t ethics to scalping is funny. You provide absolutely no service by walking into a retail store and buying out the entirety of the modern product to then simply list it at a higher price.

when you have a single person walking out with all of the product it is indeed because they cannot meet the demand, but it is also a reason the supply isn’t meeting demand.

If you trying to buy a product out just to sell it, you are offering no service at all. You are honestly just kind of a worthless extra parasite on the system. can you do it and make money? sure you can right now, it’s a free country go ahead. but if someone wants to call it out as something ethically dubious because you are contributing NOTHING to the market besides becoming a new middle man for buying the product, then take your beats and shut up

This isn’t pre-ordering a bunch of the Mario Pikachu box and predicting that it will go up in price based on it’s niche release and iconic imagery. it’s just cornering a market with a diminished supply during a pandemic. The demand is artificially “increased” in that you have individuals buying very large amounts of the product just to resell it

it’s absolutely hilarious to defend these types of practices, and you have to be a real small fry to think it’s even worth it

These points are truth but they are “new” plus you are assuming all the demand is little Timmies getting one box each (which is not the case). How are these new? I’ve been collecting for years and this massive demand (be it natural, artificial or whatever) and i can’t remember a set prior to champions path that had so many issues with the supply. We could spend hours arguing about the many factors that lead to these spike in demand.

But basically we all have been able to get almost any product from the get go, at MSRP from any store and then suddenly we have these issues. Not even with HIF at release (it was later on that HIF was hard to find). So if you have been always able to get any product, that is aimed for kids, at reasonable prices, suddenly you have to search high and low, have contacts, pay extra, etc just to get it?

If the target product had a luxury price tag from the get go, then i would imagine anyone or very few would complain, since it is a product aimed at people with money, but we are talking about $15-50 products that are being sold for way more due to pure greed.

A shiny Venusaur and Blastoise would be epic.

Blastoise has one shiny card off the top of my head Plasma Storm/Gale secret rare.

Is the Dark Venusaur promo a shiny version? It looks like its shiny in the illustration. Unsure if it was considered a shiny pokemon back in the day.

Yeah they got close in Plasma Storm/Gale with Zard and Blastoise. That Dark Venusaur is different colored, but that isn’t what his shiny in the games is.

Target and wal mart are the biggest scalpers of all. Buying milk for $1 per gallon and selling it to me for $3. Everything in the whole store they bought at a low price and sold to me higher. Can you believe it?! They can get fucked.

That’s why I raise cows and live in a log cabin. I even grind my internet out of fresh herbs from my garden

Further than that wal mart and target never even buy their pokemon product. Mjholdings stocks their shelves and pays them money to do nothing! The worst kind of scalping flippers… selling product they don’t own!

Rabble. Rabble rabble rabble!

Venusaur doesn’t have any shinies. Blastoise had a shiny in plasma storm. I don’t know why they did blastoise and charizard and not venusaur in plasma, but I hope venusaur gets one now.

I never even thought about the fact that venusaur doesn’t have a shiny card, that is so crazy

Looking at the games shiny version of venusaur you are correct.

Right? Especially with them having the other 2 in Plasma Storm.

The color of the venusaur is a bit too dark for gen 2 shiny

I assume this is why fourthstar responded the way he did, assuming its always entitlement. First of all, this term ‘arbitrary price point’ I keep seeing is absolute bs. The price is set by pokemon which major retailers also follow. They say, this etb will be sold for 50 bucks, they set that price point for what they think the product should sell for. If they said “since this product has higher pull rates, 2 more packs, and a full art trainer, it is 70 bucks” Id be completely okay about it. The issue is not the price point but scalpers. Some joe shmoe who doesn’t even try to collect pokemon cards buys up all the local product and tries to make a quick 20 bucks off me or anyone else who actually wants it. They provide NOTHING of value. They are completely detrimental.
It is not this 70-80 price of the etbs people are selling it for that pisses me off, just scalpers. If a lgs sells them for 80 bucks, I have 0 problem with this. If I buy a new japanese booster box online for 80 bucks, I have 0 problem with this because they provide the service of giving me access to otherwise inaccessible japense products in america. And people like you who have this sentiment towards people upset at scalpers is only hurting the hobby. Pokemon themself said “not enough people got this product, we will print more” or something to that extent meaning pokemon agrees we should have access at stores to the newest product. Now if I go to the store and its sold out, thats fine by me, I missed out oh well. But if I see on facebook marketplace 20 etbs at 80 bucks, thats the real issue.
