I was about to buy a case of each set that is available for $500 a piece, as pokemon sealed boxes have seemed a great investment over time (English Booster Box Fair Market Value - Google Sheets), but with this happening again, I can’t be so sure. So I’m going to wait about a few months. I expect we should know more within 2 months, because by then we could hear an announcement for PHF “rerelease”, which would really begin to upset me. Because this set is expanded, and would likely prompt the rereleases of many more sets to come, and who knows if it ends with XY, because LTR and plasma sets will sell…
Not saying that I agree with it all, but he adds some interesting points and perspectives to the conversation.
I too am stuck changing the way that I operate because of what they have done. It is insane the timing of these two announcements, both the roaring skies and primal clash re-releases. I literally had just ordered $3k worth of product focused around roaring skies packs (mainly mewtwo figure boxes as well as rayquaza boxes) about a week before they announced the reprint. I had several buyers awaiting their shipment of $200 lots of 36 packs of roaring skies when they eBay preorders came up for $95 sealed boxes. I made out better than I could have with that lot, but still got stuck selling much of it off at break even or slight losses. Same goes for primal clash. I just got through opening 12 cases of primal groudon/kyogre figure boxes that were primarily going to be profitable for their primal clash boosters going at ~$150 for 36 loose packs on eBay, then the same day that I listed my stock, I get an e-mail from my supplier about a second reprint re-release whatever you want to call it of another “out of print” set.
Things have definitely changed. They (TPCI) have definitely changed and their word can never be taken the same way again. No sugar coating it, it really is a shitty way to do business with these last second shady word of mouth re-releases of sets that weren’t supposed to be printed again. I think long term it will only have negative effects for the company.
@doublechip I did see that one first. Again some solid points in that one, and I agree with some but not all of it as with alpha. I think the tune may change for some with a potential ancient origins reprint down the line, but we will have to see if they go that direction or not. The tune didn’t really change from anyone brushing roaring skies off as a one off thing when primal clash became the second off though, so a third one won’t change anything in some peoples eyes I imagine.
No one was overpricing roaring skies, that was simply the fair market value. The natural demand and increased prices on roaring skies are a sign of a healthy market.
Also, TCPI is dependent on retail businesses making orders and selling their product. If anything these sporadic releases are a risk for TCPI. Ultimately I don’t think it will have much if any real effect for them, again because the market is so much larger today, which benefits everyone.
Exactly my point, WAS until a decision made by TPCi occurred. It seems basic, amateur and unrealistic for a huge, intelligent and successful company to think this way but at the same time it makes sense in a lot of ways. To put it in another perspective, they could have studied the sales of XY sets within resellers all over the Internet and have decided to take initiative responsibility to make some bucks for themselves by re-printing these sets. They can basically reprint Base Set(Evolutions/CP6) why not these? To them they are just cards, whilst to us they are “fair market valuables”. Hell if they wanted to they could have upped the price, but then resellers would have still had a chance to have a market for themselves which is something I wouldn’t strategically let happen hence I created that item. Just opinion not a fact at all. A mere idea if you will, since most can not find a reason as to why this is happening.
I think the reason is to keep the product in standard rotation “more accessible”. That is just my current hypothesis. Considering mtg prints their standard product until it is not in rotation anymore.
Ah yes it was so terrible of me to feed a market demand. I should have sold them at $99.99 and never been able to keep them in stock and perpetually lose money. I sure got what I had coming.
“Resellers” serve a big role in the market and being one (along with being a collector) I allow collectors to buy promos/pins/jumbos/codes/figures or whatever other single small item at ridiculously low prices instead of having to pay $20/$25/$40/$80 for the whole box and all the other junk they don’t want that it comes with at wally world.
Shame on me.

@smpratte that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, and if it is something that they are shifting to it would be nice if they would just mention that specifically and be transparent about the whole thing. Instead of these shady last second word of mouth re-releases on sets that were supposedly out of print.
I think it’s just a life lesson and move on… things, people, situations in life are not going to be “fair” sometimes, we just have to accept it and grow from it rather than let it bring you down. What this means for with pokemon and re-releases and reprints from this point moving forward? It’s not always going to be a homerun but at least you will be able to make your money back in the future of a booster box; at least. which still isn’t that bad at all, things could be done more “unfairly” by Pokemon. It’s no big deal; for new pokemon people like myself it gives me a chance to buy primal clash packs which I never had the chance to because I wasn’t collecting when it was released and it’s cool to be able to get some of these older full art cards. Adapt to the circumstances to be in a better position in the future when this repeats itself(if booster boxes is something you want to involve yourself and finances in).
