Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (Gen 9) announced

They are certainly not cooler than Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem, Xerneas or Yveltal. But they definitely don’t deserve all the hate they are getting, either.

It seems like every new generation that comes out people go through the same cycle of comparing new Pokémon to Digimon or having a general dislike for their designs. Fast forward three to five years and everyone’s clamoring for a remake or for Pokémon to bring back some mechanic that was introduced during that generation. I think some people might just need time for the designs and games to grow on them and to develop a connection to them. It won’t be long before there are video essays titled “Why Sword and Shield are actually the BEST Pokémon games!”. If there aren’t already lol.

That said there are people who I’m sure genuinely dislike new Pokémon designs and that’s fine too.

I like how the new Legendaries are Dragon/Lizard inspired. Big fan of Dragon types in general

A fun little game to pass the time. I hid a certain thing on the map of Paldea. It’s pretty small so you need to zoom in to find it. First one to find it wins.

On the new legendaries, “Capsul Monsters on Motorcycles”(?) I was thinking today between all the art in Magic that I collect and all the art of Arita that I love so much - MTG art is often better than Pokemon art, BUT I’m not drawn to it as much. Perhaps, it’s because the simplicity of the creatures allows them to be shown off more and better. Satoshi(?), Sugimori(?) commented once that he wanted simple creatures that kids could be attached to, like he was, and I wonder, if the newer complex designs make new pokemon less memorable or approachable. IDK… Just a thought.

I checked the whole picture and couldn’t find anything. :expressionless:

I guess Blastoise never received the Steel type because that type was introduced in gen 2 and they didn’t want to change the typing of an iconic starter Pokemon retroactively.

Regarding the new battle gimmick, I’m ok with the crystalized look, but I don’t like the huge crystal hats that come with the transformation. Looks kinda ridiculous, like each Pokemon gets a Doug Dimmadome treatment.

Someone was talking about pronunciations of Pokémon in another thread today.

Got me thinking, do you think we will ever see voice acting in Pokémon games, I really think it’s long overdue.

@xileets mentioned stadium which has at least some voice elements.

Dragon quest VIII (which is somehow most comparable to pokemons newest games in terms of RPG mechanics…over a decade later, had some of the best voice acting and really made it come alive.

Pokémon need to add this in the coming years.

Thoughts on newest trailer:

3 separate storylines to choose from is the biggest news for me. I am hoping that the other 2 storylines besides the regular gyms then E4 are fleshed out in their own way and not just an instant free roam and something else with no substance.

The terastalise thing is dumb as heck but almost so goofy that I can excuse it. (Cope)

Fidough, and Cetitan are great. Especially Cetitan. I really hope there are at least 80 new Pokemon, preferrably close to 100 but I fear this might be another 60-65 Pokemon generation.

I am ready for another qt ice gym leader in my life.

I have skipped out on ultra sun and ultra moon to the current generation of mainline pokémon games. i have seen the corners that have been cut, and have not wanted to buy any of the latest games.

That being said, this one looks like it has some potential.

I like that Pokémon is finally going open-world. I am really curious how “open” it will be. I am also curious how “alive” the world will feel. I want it to feel more like BOTW, where there are resources to collect, little puzzles, and side quests to complete all scattered throughout the map.

I like that Pokémon actually have textures now. Since X and Y, every pokémon has just looked like a plastic toy. Now Seviper has scales, Beartic is furry, etc.

I really like what they are doing with the legendaries. I am excited to have them be a more permanent partner throughout my journey!

I agree with fourth and others that think the terra form is a little silly. Pokémon games sell millions of copies anyways, instead of introducing a one-off battle mechanic each gen, i think they should use those resources for worldbuilding, adding back old desired features, etc (but who asked me)

overall, I am pretty hopeful for this game!

Not confirmed of course, but its been implied through leaks that this gen has a lot more new pokemon. We do reach 1000 pokemon this gen. The current number is 905. Looking pretty good!

This is one of the best things I’ve noticed from the trailers. The designs look a lot better than Swsh. It seems they also messed a bit with the outlines of the models, so it looks less jarring against the rest of the environment. There are some videos on youtube that have gone a bit more in depth on the texture differences. Really promising!

I haven’t had time to look at much, but I hope so! =) Since we’ve moved beyond handheld limitations, I’d hope that they have better more detailed graphics.

I think Gen 9 trainers look great. They keep designing these “eye candy” trainers that really catch your attention. Can’t wait to see how their aesthetics tie in with their character.
