Holo Pattern Appreciation Thread

There has been several posts and threads showcasing japanese reverse holos, ex era reverse holos, language exclusive holos like these and these, neo double holos and for example some varying cosmos foil patterns but not any place where to show or talk about holo patterns as whole, at least not in several years.

A holo pattern is one if the main factors of the appeal of a card and it can gain significant differences in price it the holo pattern changes, seen for example with cosmos foil fossil cards and all the the test prints that have surfaced recently. Or the special holo pattern can spice up otherwise mediocre card or lacking ultra rare design.

I’m hoping someone with a possibility to put a decent amount of spare time in good use makes also an article about different holo patterns used in pokemon tcg history but meanwhile the topic can be discussed here. Feel free to show your favourite holo pattern, make a list of holo patterns used in theme decks, share news of new holo patterns released, inform everyone else about a language exclusive holo pattern or anything about the topic. They can be really difficult ones to photograph properly but give it your best shot!

I want to mention some of my favourite holo patters, i’m always a sucker for a good crosshatch holo or cracked ice holo like these two.

Also glad to see some special ones used like these very sparkly legendary treasures RC growlithe and beginning set samurott, wish it was more common that they included a special holo pattern in some specific releases.

Also i’ve lately picked up few japanese reverse holos since the creativity and appeal of them has been excellent like with these 25th anniversary reverses, will pick up at least a shiny star v reverse at some point and hoping to see japanese reverses get more varying holo patterns in future too.

Also very interesting to see the new reverse holo pattern mentioned here. I’ve been a big fan of english SV reverse holo pattern so i’m curious to see if they’ll top that and if it will be a set exclusive or if it’ll continue in later sets too.

Seems like a nice place to show off this Jumpluff. It’s well known that Secret Wonders (and maybe other sets from DPPt?) had printing issues leading to a lot of cards having varying degrees of holo bleed. I was occasionally searching for a Jumpluff with a good amount of holo bleed that wasn’t too scratched up and ran into this one recently that I picked up.

Probably my favorite. Water web, oil slick, whatever. It’s beautiful

The greatest foil, and the one we’re least likely to see again. :milky_way:
Cloudy, earthy, endlessly deep. Subtle, yet capable of explosive displays.
Nothing short of magical!

Galaxy and rendered backgrounds was an absolute jackpot.

The greatest era for Holo is ex!
Imagine tpci creating a new Holo pattern for each set every couple months nowadays! They really put a lot of effort into those early years.

My favorites are the somewhat “golden” reverse look of the first 4 sets and deoxys

Couldn’t agree more. The EX era reverses had so much flair! Love to pick up random ones occasionally.

Not to mention that its the only era to give every single pokemon in a set a holo treatment. Its very nice for species collectors who arent going after fan favs. Wailmer has 1 “holo” card and its an ex reverse

The holo pattern is slight but noticeable as it’s all over the card. Looks beautiful in person.

This holo pattern sparkles only on the amulet and the borders of the card. Took a few pictures before I could get the holo pattern to sparkle in the photo.

I definitely like how Pokémon tries to have a wide variety of holo patterns.

One holo card? I think you may be mistaken. Are you forgetting the most popular Wailmer card as voted by E4?

But seriously. At least the holo-treatment Legend Maker Wailmer is one of the best Wailmer arts out there.

When I have the time, I want to make a poll on E4’s favorite EX era reverse holo pattern, making sure to point out the nuances like the reverse rare gold foiling in the name/HP for some sets and the holo pokeball in the attack box for FRLG. I’m not even sure which one I like best.

haha yeah I guess that counts. I like the holo bleed one a lot

I would imagine there are a ton of species that have their only holo cards as ex reverses w/stamps

Oh yeah, the holo bleed version does look pretty sweet. Since we’re in this holo appreciation thread, I might as well post a picture of it.

I think you’re right, with Hoppip and Skiploom included (whose art-box holos are only in TRR—at least, before Shiny Star). But TPC is spreading the love to a lot of random pokemon now through illustration rares and shinies, which is nice to see.

Cracked ice over the mirror reverse is something

Ooh I really like that “crosshatch” Scyther. Learning something new everyday. Going to keep an eye out for that pattern now!

I can’t speak to specific holo patterns but I do know this charmander cosmos displays better than every card I own and I really enjoy looking at it.

I also really like this Arbok!

EX Fire Red is the best!

Even without ex cards or gold stars I’d desire EX Deoxys, it has a nice selection of Pokemon for sure but the exclusive reverse holo pattern is something what makes it stand out from rest. It’s like looking at light beacon in the middle of darkness.

Reverse holos from EX FRLG and EX Legend Maker are another highlight from gen 3, always a joy to browse through these binder sets.

@joponnes

Thanks for pointing out Shrouded Fable will receive new holofoil treatment, must’ve missed it but Kingdra ex promo was already good enough reason to wait for leaks/content. :pikahappy:

I saw crosshatch was mentioned, I was always a fan of the crosshatch league energies

I too was thinking about including a japanese classic collection card in my first post, pity that the english ones are so much more plain

I also really love the fireworks pattern on the legendary reverses
