The first rare card I ever pulled was a Pokémon Trader from a pack of unlimited base in 1999. It wasn’t much of a first pull, but I still own that exact card, and it’ll be one of the last I ever get rid of.
My very first cards though, were a Magnemite, Staryu & Pikachu given to me by a friend that jumped on Pokémon as soon as it released. If it wasn’t for those three cards, I may not have ever bothered taking a real look into the hobby, since I didn’t generally follow the schoolyard fads.
Anyways, my most memorable pull was probably Charizard Ex from FrLg. I’ve mentioned the story elsewhere on the boards in the past, but it all basically boiled down to an accident…
I visited my local toyshop one Saturday with the intention of buying four packs of Ex Legend Maker. At the till, pointed to the set I wanted through the clear perpex display box-thing that held booster packs at the edge of the till, and the staff member accidentally picked up FrLg instead of LM. Being pretty shy at the time, I didn’t say anything to the staff, and just took the packs (I still remember thinking that there was nothing left bar the Charizard - which obviously I had no chance of pulling - that I really wanted from that set and the overall disappointment, since I was actively hunting the holo Mew from LM at the time).
Well I got home, and with a sigh, decided to open the packs. Pack number one and two had nothing spectacular (Dodrio & Primeape non-holo’s, if I remember rightly). But pack number three. Oof. There it was, Charizard Ex in all its glory! I started shaking as I realised what I was holding, and probably looked something like this: . It was my first Ex and the first time I had even seen one in person.
Kept that card safe, and finally got it graded in 2019. Predicted a 9/10, but just drew the short straw with the grader in the end.
Other particularly memorable pulls include a no symbol Snorlax from the Jungle booster included with the Tempest gift box; Shining Celebi from a Neo Destiny pack (before I even knew Shinings existed), and scoring Charizard, Tyranitar & Cloyster holo’s from my first ever four packs of Expedition on the day that the set released.
