First Pull and/or Memorable Card?

Hi folks!

Felt like posting something light-hearted.

Wanted to know what card was your first pull and/or your most memorable card? Any short stories or connections you wanted to share?

Feel free to use your own image or find an image on bulbapedia, doesn’t have to be your own.

As for me, my first ever pull was in middle school sitting on a bus. I only had one pack of Unlimited Base but as I was obsessed with dragons, I was wicked happy to have pulled a Dragonair:

Ended up trading it for Magmar in my gullibility (another kid told me diamonds were more rare than stars) but then got it back thanks to a buddy of mine after I regretted the choice.

What was everyone else’s first pulls and/or memorable cards?

The first booster pack I ever got was a jungle pack - pulled a non-holo wigglytuff. I must have stared at every card from that pack for weeks.

The most memorable card from my childhood is EX Dragon Dragonite ex. It was my favorite card (and still is), and I took it everywhere. But I don’t remember actually pulling it. The first card that I vividly remember pulling was a Dark Celebi reverse holo from EX Hidden Legends. But the main reason why I remember that one is probably because I subsequently traded it for a Raikou ex lol.

Most sentimental card is probably Brocks Mankey. I never saw an english card before and after seeing that this mankey is even owned by brock himself made me absolutely adore it. I think I traded a Clefairy Holo for it haha. Ever since hooked with Gym!

I still have the exact copy I traded for…one of my most treasured cards, have to get it graded sometime in the future.

I also have great memories with a Neo Gen Meganium…but that story is for another time

Don’t ask me why. It just was.

Odd batch of cards, but these mean the most to me, sentimentally speaking. I almost sold my flareon 3 times, thankfully the deals didn’t go through, as it means a lot to me. I traded the Deoxys to someone once, and I spent 3 years trying to get it back.

My first card ever my cousin gave to me. It’s in rough shape but I’m happy I still have it. Love the art!

The guy at the movie theater gave me Ryhorn instead of the movie promo, idk if he scammed me because I was a kid that didn’t know better, or because they ran out.

I pulled the below card at a prerelease, was one of my first big pulls getting back into the game. Thought about selling it on eBay for $200 the day I got it (would have bought multiple 1st ed base zards back then), but I’m glad I kept all my cards

My most memorable pull was definitely this Hitmonchan. I had some pretty bad luck on my first good few packs and finally pulled this as my first holo. I remember just standing in the front doorway of my house with it so that I could see the holo reflect from the sunlight.

The only card I remember in my first pack was a Base Metalpod

The first card I actually remember pulling is a Gengar from I believe Fossil but i remember it somehow got lost/stolen a few days after i got it. I was very young at the time hence why I do not remember which set it was from.

My most memorable pull was by far Latios EX from EX Dragon. It wasnt long after the set came out cause the only way I wouldve known about this specific card was through the TV commericals. I remember running around my house jumping and screaming with joy that I actually got (and in one of the first packs I opened from the set). This card is going with me to my grave lol

I pulled this baby as a kid an I’ve loved it ever since. It’s been in a binder for at least 15? years. Granted, not a good binder, and not in good quality pages until recently, but it’s still perfect to me

I had very good beginners luck.

My first ever holo pull was a Magneton. Pulled it from one of the first two boosters I was gifted, both Blastoise pack-art.

Second time I open packs, I’m sitting on a bus going somewhere with 3 packs in my hands. I open them, and out comes a Venusaur holo and then a Nidoking holo. 3 holos in 5 packs, safe to say I was hooked after that.

Most memorable pull is hard to say. Not the most memorable, but I remember this one time, it was a Saturday, I had just enough money to buy one pack. I knew the odds were stacked against me pulling anything good and I felt a bit sad about that. So you can imagine my surprise when I pull a Alakazam holo out of that one pack, one of the very holos I wanted.

Besides childhood cards, more recently, a rainbow rare tapu Lele! Pulled it from a dollar tree pack and sold it for $100. That along with Pokémon go is what got me back in the hobby a few years ago.

My first purchase was the Zap! theme deck and an unlimited jungle booster pack. And I was lucky enough to get a holo Jolteon from my very first pack! Electric and psychic are still my two favorite types and I still have the Mewtwo from the theme deck, but traded the Jolteon away unfortunately. However, my most memorable pull was definitely a holo Dark Charizard since I believe I was the first kid to have that card at my school. I resisted the pressure to trade it away and still have that card in my collection which is kind of amazing.

My first card was Base Unlimited Magnemite in 1999. One of my neighborhood friends gave it to me. He got me into the TCG right then and there. I obviously wanted more so I asked my parents for cards.

My mom took me the store and bought me an Overgrowth theme deck and a few base packs. She also did something else which I’m very grateful for: she bought me a binder and instructed me to store all my cards in it from day one and always take very good care of them. I followed her advice and I remember always being unusually obsessed with card condition and keeping everything mint.

Gyarados was my first holo (from the Overgrowth deck), and Zapdos was the first holo I pulled from packs. All these years later I still vividly remember seeing both those cards for the first time.

I was writing a post and looking for a picture of my original Jolteon, when I came across this post of mine from 2017. So I decided to just be lazy and quote it here, haha.

Reading this quote from 2017 back, it’s funny how I don’t even mention the Moltres #21 promo, which is one of my most memorable cards, and my favorite artwork of all existing Pokémon cards. So here another more recent quote for that:

The Charizard is what I consider my first collection card. I was in choir class in 2003, my friend was digging in his wallet and pulled this Charizard out of it. It looked just as bad as it does here. He’s like “Dude! I forgot I had this in there. It’s gone through the wash a few times.” It was glorious! I’d never had a Zard before, and I said, I’ll give you a buck 50 for it? He said, “Buy me an ice cream at lunch.” Did any of you have those crappy ice creams at your high school? Where they were practically frozen solid, and stale sprinkles, and sold for $2 for the first 25 people at lunch time? yeah. So I raced my butt to the lunch line, and got an ice cream, and traded it to my friend for this Zard. Mmmm. Hottest and coolest trade ever!

My first packs were Japanese Rocket. Each had a holo card in it, which totally spoiled me, because I thought ALL boosters would have holos… This Dark Hypno was my first rare, and I loved the 3 holo dots next to the pendulum, like it was a reflection of sorts. Plus that background!

The Devolution spray was my first english rare… I was heartbroken. lol.

The Jolteon is my most memorable. I was out with my dad at Family Fun Center. My parents were not well-off, so this was a special thing, and even more so that my dad gave me money to “waste” on a claw machine. They had a claw machine full of cards shrink-wrapped to sponges and I actually pulled a non-holo clefable, but I already had one, so we asked the guy if I could get something else. He gave me a “Really?” look but then said, “Yeah, why not?! You’re the first person to get anything outa this. Nice job.” He climbed into the machine, told me to pick one out, I chose the holo jolteon. =)

Pokemon TCG came out pretty late in India. And even when it did, there were a lot of counterfeit products circulating. I still have copies of the really cheap cards which I had purchased which were just reprints of base set cards on some cheap cardboard. I also remember they used to be available in transparent packs (team bags) as well. We dint know any better since we had no idea how any of the cards of packs are supposed to look like.

But finally it did happen. Some of the stores were stocked with Team Rocket packs. This was the first time I had ever seen any official product. I was fascinated by a black colour of the pack. I vaguely remember that it cost about ~ USD 90 cents (2002 prices) for each pack. I had to save almost a week of my bus fare to be able to buy a pack. Opening a pack was indeed a thrill and my greatest memory is pulling a Dark Blastoise card. I managed to save up for a few more packs and I had pulled both the hollow and the non-holo card. My mum got a Business card older from her workplace for me to store all my cards in. I was lucky I did that before I left home for studies and work. It somehow survived all these years and to my surprise my mum kept it safe always stating that she would give them to my kids one day.

I also treasure my Funskool cards. These were the cheaper alternative to collecting. I remember that the green Pokemon packs (Skyridge) were just too expensive, we always had a cheaper option. Also, I did not know that these were not official products. It still satisfied the itch for colleting and we did not know any better anyways. I still have most of them as well.

Cheers!

I think my base unlimited Ninetales was the first holo I ever pulled. I remember my mom buying me the pack from a cardshop while we were on a day trip to a nearby town.
