Let me get the popcorn ready
Do you think rotation is the only reason why this set is continuing to rise in price? How has this affected demand?
Thereâs only 10 or so boxes listed on TCGplayer before $500.
Iâm here for the pokebuffet victory lap.
To be fair, booster box prices are usually divorced from the average value of their contents. EX Series boxes are 8-10k+ (much more for stuff like Dragon Frontiers, Deoxys, etc.) however youâd be lucky to net $500 in value out of most of them.
With a set like Evolving Skies, with so many âpossibleâ big pulls, I can definitely understand the high prices. That being said, it will be interesting to see how Evolving Skies stands up to the decrease in interest/prices weâve been seeing recently in alt arts and modern.
On another note, rotation means absolutely nothing for this set. The set has zero playable staples and we arenât in 2015 anymore where prices are driven by TCG playability and Shaymin EX is a $50 card. All top TCG decks can be built for under $100, all in. There used to be an idea that Pokemon would only reprint in-rotation sets, but Evolving Skies hasnât exactly been print to demand.
Fair point and honestly youâre right. I have a blind spot. When product is readily available, or not vintage, my brain is incapable of understanding the difference between EV and FMV. Probably the mindset of a singles collector vs box breaker.
The rotation is more towards stopping speculations of possible future ES reprints once and for all.
This.
Itâs also possible that the increase in price is tied to the anticipatory demand drummed up from S7R Sword & Shield Blue Sky Stream Chinese Expansion.
Maybe this is a bump from the tcgplayer holiday giftcard promo? (Spend $200, get $40 free.) If you did that twice, youâre right in the range for the ES booster box
Tell me youâve only been into stonking since 2020 without telling me.
They have and can reprint stuff whenever they want. IF SV looks like its not making money you better believe theyll look to past successful sets
Wheres that Evolutions market watch thread again?
Lol obviously they can still go up and itâs not likely to happen with a big reprint. But dang these modern investors think they have done so much researchâŚ
I sold the 2 cases I had almost a year ago for around $350 a box. I really thought there was going to be a reprint but no regrets. I think weâll probably see $500+ a box this year. This set is just really really popular and the supply is starting to decay.
Wouldnât be surprised at all if this were to get a surprise reprint down the road considering what happened with Roaring Skies.
I know some people who bought cases at $400/box. Seemed a bit insane at the time, but if their plan is to hold it for 5-10 years, theyâll be looking good.
Cut those people out of your life
Sorry I let you down. I opened the cheap one and then decided I wanted one of each SWSH box on a shelf.
I think this is the answer. It looks like typical box price movement. There is a lot of supply at the bottom price and eventually it dries up and the price hits an inflection point that pretty quickly bumps the price up.
Times have changed and its a bit tougher for modern sets now but⌠Id say Evolving Skies did everything right. They hit it out of the park with this set undoubtedly. Maybe other modern sets will have a tough time growing in todays market with hoarders and so called âexpert investorsâ but ES will get a pass imo just because its levels above other modern sets. And because it caters to a very big fanatic market of the hobby, eeveelutions fanatics. Doesnât matter if youâre an eevee fan or not the artworks are beautiful and they added the cherry on top by including dragonite and rayquaza and other beautiful works. The set is timeless and continues to show healthy growth. I mean⌠people are literally obsessed with it⌠it created a whole new branch of obsession that put it in a league of its own. Moonbreon will forever be embedded in history. Its basically folklore at this point lol kidding but not really. There are really two types of fanatics in this hobby that really stick out. Those two are Charizard and eeveelutions fanatics. Really take that into consideration. Regardless if there is a reprint or not this set speaks for itself and will re-evaluate itself in time.
If 2019 Team Up and other sets can hit $1.2k - 2k I dont see why Evolving Skies cant topple those other sets in time. Regardless of hoarders and tough pull rates people are still ripping these open and enjoying them. Everyone is still obsessed with it. People go looking for this set everywhere they go. Im on my 70th box and still havent learned my lesson lol. For the generations growing up and even tenured collectors that have been around since the beginning of time, Evolving Skies will be considered top notch and will continue to show healthy growth. Thats my opinion of course.
Side note: Also, the first major jump happened in 2019, not 2020. A lot of people always say 2020 was the game changing year and 2020 this and 2020 that⌠No⌠2019 was the game changing year that propelled the market to a whole new lvl. Just because some people started collecting and made profit in 2020 doesnt mean 2020 was the first massive jump for poke. Pokemon has always gone up but in 2019 it really changed the game. In 2020 the 2ND major jump happened, lets all get that right.
I can bump it if you wantâŚ
Evolutions boxes have seen a slight bump recently. They were around $700 but sell for $800+ now on eBay. Held up pretty well from their $1200 high in 2020-2021.
Eeveelutions are boring. No reason to collect them. People should probably just sell all they have, especially high end Japanese promos
Seems reasonable enough, listing now!!
One thing the Covid era price transition demonstrated is the truth behind Keynesâ âmarkets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solventâ. No matter what the fundamentals say, prices whether high or low can blow away expectations of whatâs likely to happen.
In other words, for price speculation it makes debating about how circumstances might be different now compared to X number of years ago fairly redundant. More hoarders, collectors, investors, stinky-stonkerinos, or whatever, doesnât really matter. History tells us that all sealed product eventually goes up, but because factors that affect demand right now may be vastly different in the future, and on an unpredictable timescale at that, the price of Evolving Skies may not conform to any sort of evidence-based theory or expectation. So to be a massive party pooper Iâd say itâs all pointless to debate and just sit back and chill. ButtttâŚ. if I was to rub my tingly crystal bawlz Iâm gonna guessâŚ. $1k by early 2025!
