Thank you! No, this was the first time I did the back. It took a long time as well so I likely won’t do it for every card going forwards.
@UKLugia Every new work just seems to have more stuff added to it! All the new additions look really nice—especially love the cosmos foil border on the back. Great work again
@Mr.Garrison How about all of them Like our jack-of-all-trades @lyleberr!
Just looked at all your posts in this thread, real incredible work. Some of those are mindblowing. I actually know nothing(apart from show stuff) but still collect some ygo cards just for the art. Some of yours are just insane!
I’m really curious on this latest one tho. Love the texture with the grass, but especially the card text part.
Anywhere I can read about(I’m sure that’s easier than typing your whole process) that embossed reverse holo part? Really curious what the material is and how you did it.
Part of me thinks it’s like, a thicker type of foil you press with different angled/sized tools? But that seems maybe too simple. Your recreation of that pattern(def not an easy one) is top notch! Care to share at all or rec a vid/article?
It’s actually a lot more straightforward in concept than you might expect…the top layer is a standard reverse holo copy of the card that I textured by hand. You need something really fine but not SO fine that it will scratch/tear the surface. Some people use nail dotters but I found even the smallest ones weren’t enough for me.
So I use an empty 0.28 ballpoint pen at the moment which is super-fine on the point but is heaps more forgiving when it comes to potential damage.
The actual texturing is a mix of defining all of the edges of the pattern and then embossing all the in-between bits. It requires decent pressure and lots of teeny-tiny circling motions to gradually apply the effect across the card. I have to do this over a course of days because applying the pressure and repeatedly doing the same small motion eventually causes me pain in the hand! So I have to be sensible about it and keep texturing sessions like this to a controlled time.
Also, there is scope to define the edges and also introduce your own patterns or additions to enhance what is already printed on the card so that’s nice.
Hope that explanation is of some help!
That’s awesome. Thanks so much for the response, I’ll have to read a few times to fully envision. Simple in concept but def a rigorous execution.
I feel you on the hand pain(sanding plastic/small jewelry sucks). Easy to get caught up in the excitement and pay for it later.
Very cool process and the results speak for themselves.
Thanks again and I look forward to any other cool creations you have in the future!
Two recent works made as submissions to Proxymon_de’s illustration contest (currently running on IG)
The theme is a mini set based on the ex era of the tcg, named ex Pinkan Island. The set will be made up of various Pokémon drawn by multiple artists where the primary color of each mon is changed to pink; just like the anime episode it references.
My submissions were Latios and Tropius. Enjoy
I will say it again here, that Latios is gorgeous. You can truly feel the speed of flight in the artwork and the sun behind is just mood. Great great work. I also like the POV on the Tropius. Seems like a great way to showcase the size of the Pokemon. Really enjoyed these both and I wish you all the success with the illustration contest.
Cheers!
Incredible work once again!
The Latios is just sooo good! It’s also kind of a completely unexpected setting for it when we’re normally used to skies, mountains etc. (general dragon type environments) in the artworks. This makes it more striking somehow.
In a side note, I swear I was following proxymon_de on Insta but it seems I have been removed or glitched out for some reason which is weird. I loved their ex proxies with amazing artwork but I was never fast enough to snag the ones I wanted from their Etsy (they used to be really limited and sell out in an instant… Rocket’s Lugia and the dark-type Rayquaza ex, I am looking at you!)
Thanks so much! Funny thing is, I realized afterward that Tropius is only 6’7” normally haha. It’s okay to exaggerate in art though, right?
Yeah it was fun drawing him in a different environment! And ty Ty! Also proxymons original acct got banned so he had to make a new one, that’s probably what happened
@cyberurchin these are fantastic. The movement and composition in Latios is so good. I also love the colors you chose to compliment the pink. It’s as if the sunset is reflected in the Pokemon. I too love the view on Tropius. I just love seeing Pokemon from new perspectives. Thanks for sharing
@bbobrob I’m not what I would consider “artistic”. I’d love to learn but I honestly don’t know where I would start. I really liked @lyleberr 's breakdown on the stain glass piece because it gave me a surface level idea of the process.
An e4 repository of crafting tutorials would be awesome!
As an aside - my sister had a beginner crotchet kit on her Christmas list and I bought it for her. I can’t confirm or deny, but there is a strong possibility I’m going to bring Jolteon to the family gathering.
I may or may not act like I made it myself just to mess with her for a second
@cyberurchin Crazy good pieces again. The background on the Latios is just stunning. The color gradations, the palm trees, the water reflecting the sun—they set the mood of the piece so well. And I love the Tropius one. The perspective is great, but it’s overall just a really endearing scene to capture, Tropius reaching up for some juicy fruit to gobble on. Wishing you the best in the contest!
@Mr.Garrison A lot of crafts can be pretty cheap and have low barriers to entry, so they can be good places to start just to see what interests you most. Cross-stitching, as an example, is relatively easy and doesn’t require much artistry at all (to just follow readily available patterns). I think the most important thing if you want to try something is to just get your feet wet as soon as possible and to not get too stuck in the weeds of reading about stuff or researching before starting (unless you’re doing something complex like stained glass ). Would be great to see another contributor on this thread!
You can tell her you got yourself a kit and decided to try it out and ask her if your first project looks pretty good
Ah right, that explains it! Hopefully it wasn’t Nintendo lawyering up?
Wait, you use available patterns for your art? Why didnt I think of that?! Ive just been winging it and making stuff up .
@Mr.Garrison being happy with your art takes a certain mindset that i probably dont have. Being proud that i was able to put pencil to paper (so to speak) is what i really focus on. I had no clue how to do anything that ive done so far but the idea looked interesting, an idea of a design was kinda formed, and i made up the rest of it since i havent seen many others do what i was trying to do. For example, stained glass can be expensive so instead grab some construction paper, scissors, glue, and a cheap shadowbox… ta-da! Stained glass inspired art. All that was needed was tracing a design and cutting it out, throw some paper between the pieces to create a layer or 3d effect and now you are closer to uklugias work. Crafts are weird like that, everyone has their own interpretation even using the same materials.
Very clean looking! I think the attack could have also caused confusion but all the details are amazing!
Guaranteed paralysis seems a little too good
Like @lyleberr said, the card is super clean, and your handwriting complements the aesthetic of the card very well
I think it could have been a coin flip for heads paralysis and tails confusion but thats a lot of writing and we all know that its not worth the potential of something go wrong at that stage.
