Dallas Regional Championships: Meet Kouki Saitou!

have Dm @therealonewolf I’m from Australia so wont be able to make it to the event but if anyone could help me I’m happy to compensate them for their time and help.

Many thanks,
Owen

@vehicularmenace, @jdalcour, I don’t want to be a pain but on the off chance either of you has a spare signing slot  I’d love to know!

I’m curious to see if people got some cards signed today. Pictures??? What cards did you pick?

My buddies in Dallas got these signed for me. I got them myself last year on my trip to Tokyo. So excited to receive them! I moved from Dallas right after last year’s regionals, so it’s a shame I couldn’t make it to this one.

I’m having mine overnighted to me early this week. I’ll get some good pics and share for sure.

Yesterday I was planning on posing a large photo of all the cards I was able to have signed but as most of them aren’t mine I will leave it up to their respective owners to post them if they wish. I was able to get 42 cards successfully signed. I ended up getting two reverse-holo eevees signed.

The panels were a lot of fun and were largely the same except for the questions asked and the sample illustration. The panel started of with an introduction through Saitou’s interpreter and an exploration through his portfolio. His favorite Pokemon is pikachu and has illustrated over 400 cards of various Pokemon. He hopes to one day illustrate a mimikyu card but has not yet had the opportunity. His drawing medium depends on the look he is trying to go for. for the panels all drawings were completed with an iPad which he bought for the panels and was still getting used to. Some of his pieces are completed digital where as others are sketched and then scanned or have painted backgrounds. When not drawing pokemon he does his own illustrations which include pumpkin headed humanoids and dragons.

He then demonstrated his process by drawing pikachu, complete with a background. On Saturday Pikachu was drawn with a cowboy hat and lasso in front of a fence beside some trees (because Texas). To me it looked more like Indiana Jones due to the slouchyness of the hat. On Sunday Pikachu was drawn with a poke ball colored american football helmet over one ear.

During the post panel signing attendees were able to get a signature in English or Japanese, with or without the date, and had the choice of one of three sketches (mimikyu, pikachu or eevee). I did see one meowth and a few pikachus with afros or mario mustaches. he was very friendly and allowed pictures to be taken of him holding cards or of attendees with him. He had silver and bronze sharpies available in addition to black and red if needed. He had a three postcard set of his own illustrations available for purchase for $5. (my favorite is the dragon).

To those of you who sent me cards to be signed, thank you for trusting me with your cards and convincing me to go. this was my first Pokemon event and I enjoyed myself. If there is another something around the Dallas area please reach out and I’ll try to help in any way I can.

I got two PSA 10 crystal Charizards signed, one Japanese and one English. I absolutely love his artwork in Skyridge.

I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who came out and saw Mr. Saitou! He’s a shy person and was very nervous throughout the event but was overwhelmed by how nice everyone was and he said it made his first trip outside Japan very special. When he saw the older cards he had designed, he said it made him feel very nostalgic and thought our old reverse foils were blindingly shiny lol.

I do want to mention that I’ve heard a rumor that he was feeling ill or was unhappy. I was with him 100% of the event and asked him and his translator how he was doing each day and said I hoped he didn’t feel overworked and he said he was just fine! I believe what may have happened is a staff member who spoke to some people got it in their head that he wasn’t feeling well or wasn’t happy signing cards, but that’s completely untrue. He was very tired from traveling and worked very hard though! I asked him after we were finished today how he felt about the event, if his arm was feeling alright after signing so much (he has some wrist inflammation he’s known about for a long time), and what he would change to help provide us with feedback. He said he loved the event and was incredibly happy to have come, and his arm was feeling just fine! He said even things he wasn’t sure about at first turned out to be great and from his perspective, he had a wonderful time and genuinely had nothing negative to say. He even gave me a glowing recommendation of a colleague of his if we invite another illustrator at some point! So please do not worry because he loved his visit and thank you again to all who came and made his trip a good one!

how in the heck were you able to get 42 signatures?

@chrisbalestra,

A friend, my wife and I went to both panels and got as many cards signed as we could.

Just signed for the package! I’m over the moon!

I cracked a PSA 9 for one of the Crystal Charizards and both Mews are also mint, so I’ll probably double grade those.

The whole lot is off to PSA soon. Couldn’t be happier. I’m also excited at owning two proper Crystal Charizards signed now. Can’t imagine there’s many at all, so having two makes me really happy. Gets the rarity hype internally going. Haha

All of these cards just look incredible… thank you so much for all your help @therealonewolf, you’ve done an incredible service and one that I will be supremely grateful for for years to come! I know my mate you helped as well is overjoyed and now we cant wait to have the cards back with us (after they’ve been to Charlie)!
Have to say, I think the Eeveeloution trios look great together and were an inspired choice by those who got them, and I’m very jealous of the mews @funmonkey54!
