2023 Worlds & Japan Vacation Thread

I’ve never attended a Worlds before. How does one purchase a spectator pass?

They are sold much closer to the event. I’m sure someone will make a thread when it happens. Historically they have been pretty easy to acquire

That’s early for worlds. When (and where) did they announce that?

Hmmm…

My wife and I were going to go. But then we found out that we have baby zubat on the way. Sometimes I get bummed, but Japan will still be there. After all, tomorrow is another day!

Hoping I can make it, but having just returned from a Tokyo/Osaka solo trip last week, I’ll say it’s 200% worth it! Worlds or not, you have to make it eventually. I compiled a rough Google Map with some decent card shops I found during my time there if anyone’s interested. Pokémon and Magic were always easy to find, but I was mainly hunting vintage Digimon on my trip.

I’d highly recommend getting the JR Japan Rail pass available only to foreigners, which runs about $300 for 7 days. It’s worth it if you plan on hitting up anywhere outside of Tokyo via the bullet train ($150ish each way) and gets you access to the JR subway that’ll get you around Tokyo (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara etc). Each neighborhood has its own vibe and nightlife, and it’s all super approachable since many folks in these areas are just tourists like you looking to have fun and meet new people.

Osaka was a 3 hour straightforward bullet train ride away, and it’s an incredible place, tons of shops and attractions. They sell a thing called the “Osaka Amazing Pass” in 1 and 2 day variants for $30ish USD, which gets you access to their local subway and a ton of attractions like the Umeda Sky Tower, Osaka Castle, and tons more.

Thanks, yeah, everything you mentioned sounds great!! The Japan rail pass seems like a must to me if you want to see things outside of Tokyo too (I will stay 26 days with a 2 or 3 week JR Pass). Also the Osaka Amazing pass seems… amazing. I am quite sad that Kyoto/Tokyo dont have sth similar

Does anyone have hotel suggestions for Yokohama? Tentatively planning to go with our family, so I wanted to get something booked just in case, but it’s looking like I’m pretty late with a lot sold out.

Wondering if anyone had any suggestions as this will be our first time to Japan.

I mean there is still options, not that cheap tho. Id recommend looking at train stations that connect you quickly to the center.
The small Minatomirai line connects you well to pacifico, aside of that, a Hotel near a JR station isnt too bad.
Or you just accept paying the extra bucks for the slightly inflated prices around the convention center. I was in time and will still pay double to what I normally will. I just accepted it since its 4 days, and its worlds.

Thats the Minatomirai line. Just keep in mind that the last train goes just shortly after midnight.

If you dont care about money there are still rooms in hotels right next to the convention centre

Also we are celebrating @goigoi’s 21st birthday while we are in Japan.

So on the 17th of August at 7pm, meet us all at “Bar Psy” in Shinjuku.

We can hop around to other places once everyone who wants to come is there.

Think of it as a post-Worlds E4 meetup with alcohol.

DM me here or on Discord if you think you’ll come and with how many people, so I can organise a new venue to start at if we get too many people. (current confirmed attendees is 10)

7pm round of shots on me.

I got really lucky (?) and managed to book a room at the intercontinental, if I have not mistaken its right above the convention center. Ive been checking twice a day and hit the jackpot. seems like pokemon booked out the whole hotel

Great idea looking around the rail line! Got one booked to hold for now, but hope to find perhaps something better. It’s a little more challenging because we’re a family of 4 - ideally we’re in one room to save on costs cause the flights for the four of us are going to be bonkers (expense work research trip right?), but most options are more streamlined that then giant US rooms with two queen beds, so we may be looking at a 2-room situation.

Thanks again - will continue the search!
