Does anyone know anything about a (2000?) NON-GLOSSY Japanese CoroCoro CLEFFA #173 Promo card? I have one but I can only find info on the “Glossy” version.
Welcome to the fourum
Hello Welcome to the forums! Very lovely to have you onboard.
Are you referring to the Cleffa from the Japanese Neo set? The card was also released in 2000 and has the number 173. As far as I am aware the corocoro promo has always been glossy but maybe I am mistaken. Can you share the picture of the card you have please?
Cheers!
Thank-You! Banks.
I purchased this card in the early 2000’s from a Japanese gift shop that brought Pokemon cards in from Japan weekly. As you can see I paid $20 for this over 23 years ago. The Japanese store owner mentioned to me at that time that it was a rare Coro-Coro promo card, so I bought it. It states on the price tag “non-glossy” and back then $20 for a Japanese card was quite high but I trusted him when he said it was really scarce. I purchased quite a lot of Japanese Pokemon and Yugioh! items from him over those years so he definitely knew what he was talking about. Sadly that store is long gone so I can’t find him to get updated information. I’ve even been trying some folks in Japan with no success. I just came across this site and noticed that there’s outstanding people and information listed here so I thought I’d give it a shot. I’d humbly appreciate any help cause I’m at wits end. Kind Regards
Just to reconfirm… this is a NON-Glossy card. I have quite a few of the Glossy Coro-Coro (peel-offs) cards so it’s very easy to tell the difference. This was/is not a “peel-off”.
Hi mrbubbles,
I could be wrong but I don’t think this was part of the Neo set. It has the Coro-Coro markings on the front lower (border) area of the card.
Hmm, sorry for answering late but I have got nothing actually. I do not know why your card is non-glossy. Is it a mistake? Does the gloss wear off naturally due to rubbing or was it removed etc?
I have not tested this myself but I have read many places that you can easily remove the glossy finish from a card by simply using an eraser and gently rubbing the surface. Not saying this is what happened to your card but I could not find a non-glossy variant for the corocoro Cleffa promo.
Cheers!
They haven’t been online in over a year, but I’ll tag @KEI. Maybe they’ll know anything about a non-glossy CoroCoro Cleffa promo?
If anyone would know anything about early day niche Japanese promos, it’s them.
They also made threads for the discovery / information of:
- The non-glossy Imakuni? card
- The 1998 CoroCoro lottery reprints (including Glossy Keiji Kinebuchu ivy Pikachu)
