CoroCoro Japanese Glossy Reprints

Hello everyone,

It is clear that the Glossy Pikachu and Jigglypuff are distinguishable as part of the reprints that were limited to 2000 copies. However, have any other cards that were reprinted and limited to 2000 copies i.e. Mew, Mewtwo, Flying Pikachu, etc. been identified as differing from the original? Has anyone been able to peel the reprints and compare them to the originals or able to share photos of other cards they pulled off a reprint sheet?

Cheers!

I’m pretty sure the Jigglypuff isn’t distinguishable between the original 1996 and 2k 1998 release either, a.f.a.i.k.
Only the Pikachu is, due to the corrected illustrator Keiji Kinebuchi on the 2k release from 1998, which was the wrong illustrator Ken Sugimori on the original 1996 release.
If you know how to distinguish between the two Jigglypuff releases, I’m curious to know.

The only Glossy reprints that I know can be distinguished, are the ones from the PokƩmon Best Song CD:

But I don’t think the Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mew, Mewtwo, Flying Pikachu, etc. can be distinguished that way, since all magazine promos were peelable in a similar matter a.f.a.i.k.

Is there a way to distinguish any differences from the Toyota Arcanine promo to the reprint of it in the CD collection? I’ve only seen two different PSA slabs that had the label as Toyota promo and not Best CD for the Arcanine. I read somewhere that PSA won’t acknowledge that label anymore and just does the best CD Arcanine

No, the non-glossy cards from the CD promo set cannot be distinguished, except for the English Shadowless yellow cheeks Base Set Pikachu.

As for a short summary (here the full version with explanation):

CD promo cards which cannot be distinguished unfortunately:

  • Venusaur/Charizard/Blastoise [non-glossy holo]
  • Arcanine [non-glossy non-holo]
  • Cool Porygon/Hungry Snorlax [non-glossy holo]

CD promo cards which can be distinguished:

  • English Shadowless yellow cheeks Base Set Pikachu
  • Glossy promos (Super Energy Retrieval; Computer Error; Mewtwo; Mew)

Thanks! I was mistaken, it appears that the weakness symbols differ only between the glossy and non-glossy variations of Jigglypuff. I continue to look. It was suspected in another thread the Imakuni could be distinguished by a smudge on the right border that doesn’t exist on the reprint.

How is the search going for the Keiji Kinebuchi glossy Pikachu shifted variant of unknown origin? Have you learned anymore information about its release? Also any idea on where to begin in search of the 2k copy Pikachu? I am new to this and don’t even know where to begin, I feel like eBay will yield little results given that my past searches have been unsuccessful.

Cheers!

Unfortunately, I have still no idea of its origin or where to find it. And you’re right that eBay holds almost no results. I’ve got multiple saved searches, but in the past four years I’ve only seen the 2k Glossy Keiji Kinebuchi on eBay once, and that was an overpriced one gouging for offers.

I personally got my own 2k copy Pikachu after someone contacted me to sell it.

But the one with shifted artwork I’ve never seen for sale even once…

It is still relatively new that it was only found 4-5 years ago so hopefully one pops up!

I’m still very curious about the Imakuni blue mark on the right border and whether it was ā€œcorrectedā€ in the 2k reprint. I don’t know if one was pulled off the sheet without the blue mark would be enough to verify it as a 2k or whether that is just considered a printing error. What’s the best way to start a search for the the 2k Imakuni Sheet? Is that the buy sell thread here? Please forgive me as I am new to searching for these rarer items.

Cheers
