Would you do this trade?

I wouldn’t do it. You can probably find a raw No Rarity Zard in similar condition or better for the $7K and keep your Blastoise on top of that.

I would not do that trade.
Not a big fan of trades because 1 party is usually taking a loss.

I appreciate all the discussion here and the messages I received. After it was all said and done… I did it and couldn’t be more happy :blush:

Glad, you went through with it!

I think other people’s opinion shouldn’t matter too much. The fact you did it and felt good about it tells it was the right move, outside of any value/scarcity talk. If anything, I tend to eventually be happier with trades where I was seemingly on the losing side, it just tells you that you were willing to take a bit of a setback by doing the trade, and adds emotional attachment to the item!

This being said, I like the trade - simply because I collect Japanese over English cards, like most non-english natives wanting to collect the early Pokemon stuff!

“Everyone ignored it for 20 years” is the case for a lot of cards up until 2020, and isn’t a valid argument against a card’s long term value imo. Just because people have been hyper focused on english and devaluing the significance of japanese set cards for 20 years doesn’t mean that 30 years from now the zoomers’ children will be continuing to value vintage based on the same boxed off perspective that millenials have been stuck on. The first release of the main event base set charizard and with that kind of rarity? Where is the mental block against this card coming from? “Well its not the same, 1st edition english has a stamp.” It’s irrelevant. The stamp is just another way of distinguishing and setting it apart, same as the lack of a rarity symbol is. People aren’t buying a stamp for it’s asthetic they are buying exclusivity. It is nearly impossible to pull this card from a pack/deck anymore. Population on PSA 10s probably won’t ever even reach double digits. A BGS 8 isn’t anywhere near in the same category as a PSA 10, but I wouldn’t be so quick to call a card hyped just because it finally started getting a sliver of attention. It’s not as if the lower grades exist in relatively high population; PSA total pop is only 192. That will probably reach 300 in 2021 because of an influx of attention but that is a small number at this point.

Just my 2 cents. Probably unpopular opinion but I think no rarity charizard will be valued much more by future generations than it is now when historical significance takes precedent over nostalgia. Children not yet born won’t be rebuying their childhood when they buy 1st edition base set in their 30s, they will be buying historical significance. Just like someone who buys a mickey mantle card probably wasn’t born yet when he played.

Congrats on the trade! Now that you see it in person, what did the surface get dinged for that caused the 7.5?

@odds ,honestly I don’t see anything warranting the 7.5 surface grade. In all honesty, a lot of cards have passed through my hands, I’d give it a psa 8 and a possible psa 9. Here’s the thing… there are a lot of white “scuffs” on it… BUT by changing the angle of the slab the “scuffs” move… an example, there are some of these marks near the red border line on the back, but if I shift the card, they go over the red border line. So this proves to me they are not on the card. I think they are possibly on top of the sleeve that Beckett uses. Could they put the sleeves over the cards before they grade and the grader mistake them as part of the card? What should be my best action here? If I send to PSA, they’ll possibly mistake the marks as being on the card. Should I recase it with no subs at becket? Will they remove the sleeve and replace with a new one? …I’d hope… then after recasing send to PSA? That’s what I’m leaning towards… but I’d have to be correct in all my assumptions for that plan to pan out correctly.

@baccene,

There are a few routes to go down, I personally crack everything and just send it in to be graded I don’t like sending in slabbed cards reasoning gets into behavioral science. I send off around 10-20 cards at a time, no more no less. If I have more I’ll make separate orders just something that I do no real rhyme or reason. Note: While BGS is the most time consuming to crack I firmly believe it’s the safest case to crack in terms of not damaging your card.

The option if you don’t want to crack the case, which is completely understandable. In my opinion would be sending it to PSA with a min cross of 8 if it doesn’t cross for whatever reason send it to BGS for a regrade. There is a lot to consider but from an investing perspective I don’t really care what case it’s in until I’m ready to sell & I don’t know what the market will be like in 20 years who knows CGC might be #1 or some company that actually uses a better grading scale not 1-10 that clearly represents the condition so if you don’t plan on selling it right now I wouldn’t even bother unless you personally want to add it to your collection/display and have a company preference not strictly correlated to monetary value.

odds

the 9 1ed stoise is probably worth around 10-12k and then add the 7k you’re at 20k whereas the bgs 8 NR zard is at least 20 and will go up in value much more than the stoise or your idle cash. Good trade, do it

You should probably at the very least scan the thread before commenting. Hell, just look a few posts up.

While I haven’t really thought about Pokémon in this way before it does make absolute sense. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This is a great post. Great perspective, and the darn truth.
