Wild & Irresponsible Predictions for Pokémon Day 2024

I agree that it’s kind of stupid that they have a pretty lackluster digital card game already and are choosing to do this instead of make that game better. That said, I feel like this is a lot like Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links.

Duel Links is a mobile app that is basically like a watered down version of Yu-Gi-Oh. The games are quicker, there are less cards, less lifepoints, slightly different rules, etc. I think the main purpose is to be a lower barrier of entry to hopefully hook new people or more casual players in. They then have Master Duel which is basically just the full real Yu-Gi-Oh card game.

Based off the video, I think this is going for a similar crowd. I think there are a lot of casual people who wouldn’t download and play TCG Live, but would download what is basically booster pack simulator, and then while they’re at it maybe play a quick watered down version of the game. I’m sure the hope is to then convert some fraction of those people into full on players/collectors/fans of the IP.

What a bait and switch!! We were all expecting Johto and Unova and then we get Legends Kalos!! I am so hyped for this, I loved XY and am really excited to see what the game ends up looking like.

i mean we already have a legends title and its battle system is completely irrelevant so i wouldn’t really worry about it. speculating on a bunch of what ifs to just feel negative about something that you want to look forward to is a bit of a waste imo

The system sure but Hisuian pokemon are in SV. In either case it probably came off more cynical in the original post than I actually feel because I wanted to explain it. I realise text wall doesn’t exactly say “I don’t think this is a big deal”

I’d assume Pokemon saw the response to fans to pokemon Live and have decided to approach this in a new direction.
It looks like microtransactions are going to be the biggest thing here. Where pokemon TCG live is completely free.

We’re all gonna get rich, obviously.

If you take a look at how much money popular gacha games make, this is definitely the play. I mean, Pokemon is already doing it with Masters Ex.

Also very interested in a new Legends game. I enjoyed Arceus a lot but hope this one gets a proper development cycle and is less barren.

so these will only exist in a digital format or…

Johto and Unova needed some love, oh well.

TCG Pocket seems like the true successor to ptcgo, I’m excited to see where that goes!

Official Pokemon Twitch channel is streaming Pokemon movies if anyone is interested.

No to mention that it is also being developed by DeNa who makes Masters EX. Expect a ton of microtransactions.

I think you’re right, expecting a ton of microtransactions and will most likely not download it. When they say “get two free packs per day” in the direct I get bad vibes

Exactly. The FREE is the important part in the announcement. You can open up a lot more than 2, just will cost you Diamonds or Coins or Gems or whatever fake currency they make you buy with cash.

Friend sent this to me from NYC! Not sure if they set these up for Pokémon Day.

They’ve been there for a while as part of the Daniel Arsham collaboration

Exactly, they usually attach a more fleshed out trailer or even with gameplay. This time around it was just a date.

Hopefully it means gamefreak might improve a little bit in terms of ambition for their games.

Also 2025 release seems promising tbh.

this has to be one of the funniest Presents ever with the two big reveals being something nearly nobody was expecting.

not only did they not even mention worlds, they shared this image before the presents that clearly shows some new card, but didn’t talk about them at all. :smiling_face_with_tear:

re: tcg pocket…

  • why did they have to use the ugliest generational card layout (SM) for the non-exes

  • and make exes look worse with the extra smooth artwork and messy fx from the XY era

Am i the only one dissappointed in not getting Lets Go Johto

Huge missed opportunity :frowning:

The problem with PTCG Live wasn’t the gameplay, though. It’s just an absolute terrible app in every way. Even after a year+, the app is super slow and crashes and reboots all the time. It has crazy drain on phone’s batteries. They removed several game modes that have been available for over a decade in PTCGO (Legacy, Expanded, Tournaments), they completely removed trading (from the Pokemon TRADING Card Game), the list goes on. Plus the UI was terrible, and they’ve yet to improve it.
