No gameplay trailer has me concerned. Arceus had a gameplay trailer 1 year before release, it was fun but looked like shit. Presumably that means Z-A won’t release in early 2025, and instead will release about a year from whenever they show us the trailer. Amidst all the persistent criticism, they can’t even show us what their next big title will look like? This screams early development and “quick, we need a big announcement, put something together real fast”.
I’m hoping beyond hope Gamefreak improves the graphics and performance of their games, but they haven’t given me any reason to be confident in them. That’s all I was looking for in this direct

Yes, the event is live-streamed on YouTube and franchise updates/news/announcements are revealed in a Nintendo direct-style format.

It’s made me hope it’s an early launch on the Switch 2 which is still rumoured for 2025.
I’d rather that than it was the last Switch game

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Gamefreak has never released a new game during the first year of a new console. They made DS games when the 3DS was out, and 3DS games when the switch was out. They aren’t very forward-thinking.

I’m very excited for the new game. I don’t think anyone saw it coming. Two things that are tempering my expectations.

I am slightly apprenhensive about mega evolutions coming back. I loved them when they came out (and there’s a part of me wants to use tera normal, choice band, mega rayquaza extreme speed), but I don’t know what effect they will have on the competitive scene. I think there’s a good chance the game won’t come out until after Worlds next year, so unless they’d be retained in gen 10, or there’s an unprecedented fourth Worlds using the same game, it shouldn’t be a concern.

A tweet by Nintendo of America mentions the whole game will be set in Lumiose City. The premise is that the city has been redeveloped but I don’t know how diverse the environment will be.
Other than those two things I can’t wait. There was some speculation that the region to the north east of Paldea is Kalos, and I’ve seen some people theorise that there could be tie-in between AZ and Area Zero, his Ultimate Weapon and tera crystals.

I’m kind of confused about their tcg mobile game. So it’s probably separate from the TCG Live game they have. Would’ve figured it’d be an update to Live rather than its own new game. Just confuses me why you’d fragment the playerbase like that. I get it’s probably more for collecting, but couldn’t you add that functionality to Live?

To me, it sounded like a simplified version of the game with different rules that you can play quickly. Similar to battling in Pokemon Go vs the actual mainline games.

That’s what I thought. But couldn’t that be a “quick match” mode in Live? It just seems to me with the majority of the Live playerbase probably being on mobile, you’ll probably lose some of them to this game instead.
