What is your favourite 'weird' WotC holo

For me this Golbat from Team Rocket is very nostalgic in that no one wanted to pull it back in the day and all copies were completely mistreated, meaning my image of this card is a card that was pretty much always destroyed.

Having a clean copy of it therefore feels awesome and unreal. I also really appreciate the art now, and the fact that it is a holo Golbat which feels weird now.

I myself have absolutely no idea why I’m such a big fan of magneton from neo revelation but I just think it’s such a cool card

Definitely. And kind of weird too, because Magneton had at that point already 4 holo cards (including Base Set 2).

For me it’s because it got the steel type upgrade! The magnemite is also excellent, the pose and background really do it for me

I’m a huge fan of this chunky pink oval. Early Yuka Morii feels very “plasticky” and kinda look like CGI sometimes, but it’s incredibly charming: I’ve loved this card since I was a kid

Love Neo Discovery in General. Such weird choices for the holo cards (Houndour, Magnemite, Smeargle, Yanma).

This is one of my favorite cards in the hobby, one of Ken Sugimori’s best imo

This card features Misty’s Golduck who was never part of her team, however psyduck was a very prominent part of her team so to me this card shows Misty’s growth as a trainer along side the growth of her pokemon.

my man, I used to spend hours staring at this card as a kid. It’s so good!

Great pick! This is also the only Pokemon big mama tagawa has credit on although they contributed a ton to the tcg with trainer/item cards

I always find it fun that out of all Pokemon, Magneton has the most holos in the WOTC era

Yuka morii’s first holo! Great card

Yeah, Magneton to me embodies what Pokémon are all about. It´s weird enough to not be taken really serious, but at the same time creative enough to not be goofy.

Without a doubt its Dark Raichu from Team Rocket (one of my favourite cards ever).

There are many weird things about this card!

  1. WOTC actually created Dark Raichu, It was made for English and was the first Secret Rare card in the TCG.

  2. Its creation delayed the release of the Team Rocket set by 3 months.

  3. As usual with a lot of WOTC cards, the card has design errors. “Put Raichu on the” should read “Put Dark Raichu on the”. This was fixed on the later reprinted legendary collection copy.

  4. The evolution box is light grey usually used for Light Pokémon as apposed to dark grey for Dark Pokemon.

Only weird WOTC holo is Neo Discovery Magnemite, no matter how I look at the issue it just doesn’t fit in set focused around ancient ruins.

In perfect world Magnemite would switch places with Neo Revelation Shuckle and Neo Discovery Omastar gets promoted to holofoil.

Exactly, it’s also cool to me how most magneton holos are quite different in terms of art style and it showcases how each artist portrays this silly pokemon!

Beautiful artwork of a Pokemon I really like. But most people couldn’t care less about it, their loss!

Yeah, the only artwork I don´t really like is the Fossil Magneton, but Base, Rocket, Lt Surge´s and the Neo Revelation are all awesome.

Electabuzz is such a weird Pokémon. I remember it being really popular in the beginning, but now people just don´t care anymore. I also think that with many of these Pokémon the Gen 4 evolutions were problematic.

I appreciate the effort of removing Peter’s head for the meme

That’s crazy because the fossil magneton is one of my favorites! Shows how everyone sees cards differently!

Magneton seems like a contender for weirdest recurring wotc holo Pokemon and Skyridge H18 takes the cake for me. Love how surreal the artwork is in this one. Kusajima was given a lot of creative freedom to be able to play around with the size of Magneton and the Poke-balls, as well as the perspective.
