The Fossil Non-holo rare version of dragonite is better than his holo version. You can see the background much more vividly and the art pops more in my opinion
Although some cards defintely look cooler as holofoil. For the appreciation of the art, non-holo is indeed the way to go.
Then again, you’re already aware of that, because if I remember correctly, almost all the cards in your Mitsuhiro Arita and KAWAYOO binders contain Reverse Holos, so we can still see the artworks.
I think it looks fine but I get what you’re saying. Arita has mentioned in an interview that he thinks about the holo foiling when illustrating - I assume other illustrators do as well. So if there’s a very detailed background, a non-holo card might be better for appreciating the art. Whereas when the background is less important and illustrated in such a way that it accounts for the foiling, i think the holo adds to the art.
May have been stated already, but I believe that the 1st edition base set Charizard is overhyped.
From an artwork perspective, I believe that Arita’s artwork for Skyridge Celebi and Theater VS Alto Mare’s Latios and Latias are far superior. No offense, but the base set Charizard is simply just Charizard in front of a plain background. Arita’s masterful artworks for Theater VS Alto Mare’s Latios and Latios are essentially two different perspectives from the same scene.
From a Pokemon perspective, I believe that Blaziken and Reshiram are cooler fire types.
From a collector’s/rarity perspective, I prefer card’s that could only be attained via participation is some event (i.e. Masaki promos, Trainer Certification, Play promos).
Though, I understand other’s opinions are just as valid mine and that Many believe that Charizard is the best Pokemon and that the base set Charizard has the best design.
Honestly, it depends on the card. You’re right tho! It can really make a card pop. I often get both holo and non versions of each to pick the best.
At some points, the foil was dependent on the coloring and density of the colors in the illustration. This seemed to be the case during the wotc era. ALso the case in some EX sets, like Rocket Returns. However, some sets have clearer matting around the creature. For example, if you look at the Rocket or JP Neo 2 Dark Riachu, there is a lighting bolt between the body and tail, but in the legendary set reprint, there’s a void where that bolt aught to be. Another great example are the base zard reprints over the years. THe JP version has a solid flame, for example.
Big No. Jungle, Fossil and Rocket only had the non holos in the west cause WOTC were literally milking the set.
Also, Blaine’s Charizard is easily one of the worst, if not the worst WOTC Zard. Maybe the holo expedition one with the giraffe neck is worse, but they are close to each other
