Nice hot take. Are you referring to the ex Pokemon specifically or the sets as a whole? Because I do get behind why the CGI ex’s can be polarizing, to say the least. But there’s soo much more in these sets than just the ex’s. I find it almost hard to believe that one wouldn’t find a nice bunch of Holos, C/UC, reverses, Delta Species etc that they like. Just gotta dig into it. Took me some time to get over my ignorance, too.
The original Sugimori Charizard used on the front of Pokemon Red and the CD promo card is so ugly, a face only a mother could love. Easily the ugliest pre-DPP Zard. Weird, both the Venusaur and Blastoise are timeless classics.
With the exception of Stormfront, Supreme Victors and Plasma Storm; all modern Charizards look like shit.
But seriously, Expedition Zard doesn’t have a lot of unique features he can be proud of. Please don’t strip him of his title as ugliest oldschool Zard.
To your point, people probably wouldn’t find Charizard to be nearly as cool if all current Pokemon had been created and released at the same time in the 90s. Charizard may be one of the coolest out of the original 150, but I don’t think it holds up as well when compared objectively to all of the current 900, or however many we have now. Regardless, Charizard is way too entrenched as an icon of the hobby and franchise to ever be dethroned.
Tough question! I’m not one to have strong favorites, but I’ll say that many of my favorites across the generations are those that fit into the category of land-based bipedal fighters, dinosaurs, and dragons. For example, Typhlosion, Tyranitar, Garchomp, Zoroark, Greninja, Tyrantrum, Salazzle.
Note: I’m not claiming any of these are cooler than any other Pokemon because that’s incredibly subjective. I just personally like them. To me Charizard is in the same league. However, because I have stronger nostalgia for Gen 1 I would have to personally place Charizard above all of those. I suspect that would not be true in some alternate reality in which they all were released at the same time.
I personally think Charizard holds up very well. I am someone who loves all eight generations of Pokemon, but I think Charizard/Blastoise/Venusaur remains the best starter trio in terms of design.
Gen 2: Feraligatr and Typhlosion are cool; Meganium? Meh
Gen 3: Swampert and Sceptile are great; Blaziken is an abject disaster
Gen 4: I actually think all three of Infernape, Empoleon and Torterra are solid, but they aren’t quite the Gen 1 starters
Gen 5: Samurott and Serperior are great; Emboar is terrible, which is a shame because I love Tepig
Gen 6: Greninja is the only one even remotely cool; Chesnaught and Delphox are atrocities
Gen 7: I really don’t like any of the three final forms; I love Torracat, though
Gen 8: Rillaboom is solid; Intelleon and Cinderace? Not so much
