The color saturation differences in Base 1st Ed / Shadowless vs. Unlimited are so extreme that the latter should be considered a different set altogether. Chansey goes from multiple different vivid pink hues to washed out flatness in Unlimited.
Yeah. They even changed the colors yet again in the final 1999-2000 print run. It is a subtle change from 1999 unlimited, but the differences can be seen if you look for them. Not sure why they did that. I guess they probably were using the same color pallet as Base Set 2 at that point.
As a kid I thought that shadowless color differences were entirely a product of getting worn out due to play. I don’t think I ever saw one in mint condition. My only source of shadowless cards was from trades at Pokemon League, and that cohort tended to let their cards get beat up more than most pure collectors.
Itll be intresting to see how 1st shadowless and unlimited develop their identities as time goes on. Right now 1st ed is pretty distinct obviously, but until recently 99% of people wouldnt have known shadowless existed. Now most people do know about shadowless but still many pwople dont know what it means at all
1st edition will always have an identity with high end collectors. Shadowed unlimited will always be the most efficient option for completing the set, particularly for casual collectors. So that basically makes shadowless the poor man’s version of 1st edition… or the rich man’s version of unlimited. Hard to have a long term identity like that.
Seems like most shadowless cards that people randomly had in their binders from the 90s were from the theme decks.
Most people don’t like bats, so Zubat already had to work extra hard to overcome that. It did the opposite, choosing instead to harass us inside caves. Zubat doesn’t just screech and annoy us. Completely unprovoked, it attempts to “leech life” right out of you, like some kind of sick Wraith from Stargate. Next it might use supersonic and confuse you, which is the last thing you need when you already feel lost inside the dark cave. You finally get away from it only for one of its cronies to repeat the process 5 steps later. Yeah, no thanks, not a fan.
