Hi all—I was wondering if anyone could provide some thoughts on the authenticity of this card/signature. I tried to go down the rabbit hole on the “fake OOYAMA” (Shinichi Samejima) discussion on E4, but it seems like there is a lot of nuance about who might have signed for who and so on. I would appreciate any help!
Atleast based on the Autograph database on E4, the signature on the card seems to match with that of “fake OOYAMA” (Shinichi Samejima) himself. The dates kind of line up but are a month apart and the style of writing the numbers match on both cards.
Looks like it may have been graded by a basement company, so I wouldn’t inherently trust the authenticity of the signature (not that PSA/DNA is always correct either).
It looks like another Fake Ooyama autograph was listed on Mercari recently. No clue if it’s authentic or not.
It is interesting that PSA has graded it as a Ooyama signature. I am deciding if I should submit it as that or submit it as a “Fake Dr. Ooyama” signature. Any thoughts on that?
The thing that makes me confident in the authenticity is that it is a real card, and in very good condition. So…who would ruin that with a fake signature—especially such a niche signature?
There are folks who forged Saitou autographs on Japanese Crystal Charizards from Mysterious Mountains and graded them at BGS because PSA declined the autograph. Those cards were worth thousands of dollars without a signature. I wouldn’t recommend letting common sense give you a sense of relief here.
Also, the TMB and non-TMB Bilingual Exeggutor promos may be very difficult to discern for a lay forger. They may have thought that they signed the cheap version instead.
I would like to see the “lay forger” who stumbled upon an authentic TMB card for a non TMB price and then accurately reproduced the signature of a random Pokemon employee and not even Dr. Ooyama lol. But point taken.
