Go for it! Wouldn’t get your hopes up but you never know, and you got decent protection. It’s happed to me before where a $14 unlimited Charizard turned out to be a mint 1st ed that graded 8.5! This was over 10 years ago though.

What was the going rate for 1st edition at the time?

I want to say like 250-300 or so! I’ve elaborated about it in here before. As well as my IG. I’d be curious to see if anyone on here is holding this zard! If it would be up for sale it would be hard not to chase after it once again.

The year was 2011 maybe early 2012. I was searching eBay for Base Set Charizards trying to build a stockpile for about $15-25 per card to fill out the rest of my small binder collection. I came across this Charizard that I actually ended up bidding on trying to find a better deal! Ended up winning what was described and pictured as a Base Set Unlimited Charizard. Paid $16 and some change. A week went by with me checking the mail vigorously (the item didn't have any tracking). Sure enough, a message to the seller led to a big problem. The seller didn't even ship the card. It was a weird situation where the person I was talking to was "out" for some reason or another and they had their roommate ship out the Charizard immediately with many apologies. At the moment I thought it was the obvious "Oh Sh*t I forgot" situation on eBay. Whatever, we will see if they send it. Sure enough, the suspected Charizard came. It WAS NOT what I was expecting. Turns out I was sent a VERY decent condition 1st Edition Base Set Charizard... Is this real? Could this really happen? My mind went racing. I instantly ran to the computer, called my only other friend who was into Pokemon at the time and printed off all the messages and the listing to keep along with the card. Idk why I did that, maybe for some kind of proof because no one would believe me. To this day the only one who REALLY knows what happened was that friend that I called. He rode his bike up (lived in the same suburb) just to look at the card. For a year I treasured this random act of Arceus. Then came a time when I decided to grade it... EIGHT POINT FIVE BITCHES! It was insane to get an 8.5 for that... I didn't really even think ".5's" existed back then. After a few months, the greed got to me and I sold it for a hefty $650! I was rolling in the dough. Time for another 1st Edition Charizard and bonus cards/cash! FYI - (Yes... I do hate myself now). I never figured out what really happened, nor did I care to ask... :D Anyone see this card lately? What’s your “crazy” story!?"

Nice binder set! Honestly if these show up I might have to go after 1st edition myself. The only thing that’s really ever stopped me was charizard, the only card I really wanna spend 5k+ on are trophies and fan club magikarp

Thanks! I would be hard to go after it today, thankfully I’ve had that binder going for quite sometime. Had a had handful of zards over the years but the one I kept in that video is my oldest I’ll probably never get rid of!

Another update! The Charizard is out of Canada and has passed through San Francisco! Estimated delivery is Friday, so weirdly enough it looks like the zard might arrive before the 1st edition base. Hopefully I get this on Thursday since stuff tends to arrive a day early, but either way I’ll know by the end of the week!

Man it has all the red flags possible, but you’re protected still a crappy waste of time but yeah… hope you get it lol I’m excited to see!

Just to note that as a Canadian, who was buying years ago and took a break and got back into it again earlier this year… I’ve seen a handful of legitimate listings local on either a CL style site or an eBay Canada listing or FB group where someone “just had” this. In almost every other situation where both a first edition holo or a shadowless holo that didn’t come from decks was in someone’s possession it was because the individual made the conscious decision at some point to source and buy and import the card here… that’s really what concerns me when I see first edition charizards in Canada.

At this point I know pretty much which collectors have graded ones in their possession and which ones have ungraded binder copies as well because the collector and Pokemon collector pool for the high end stuff is so small eventually everyone crosses paths one way or another.

The fact he’s using a case as someone pointed out that’s too snug for the card as well as the fact the card is pretty beat up (which is 100% fine for 1st edition) yet he still thinks keeping it in the case is a good idea is a bit of a flag. Did he ever send you pics of the card removed from the case? I know most people say the card looks legit from that video assuming you receive the card that was in the video and the holo pattern colors look “good” and the font, etc. But there’s definitely the possibility that the case and that mildly frosted or opaque plastic was used as a way to “fool” the unsuspecting eye, etc.

Still good luck and hoping for the best! This is the part of the hunt and the hobby I always enjoyed when snagging up great deals or collections that turned out to be bug surprises, etc.

The case was pretty clear, and the holo did shine from the pictures. I’ve also purchased a proxy charizard from Etsy as a reference point and they have waaay thinner borders, as well as a modern back. I’m fairly confident that all the cards are authentic and have at some point been in the sellers possession. The question for me is if he actually put them in the box. I’ll find out tomorrow, as both of the cards are at the distribution center for my state
