Here are some that come to mind when I hear Ugly artwork. I don’t really hate any of these (except maybe the last one), but I do dislike them:
The card name isn’t called “Imakuni?'s Nasty Plot” for nothing.
Never liked either of these Metapod artworks. Especially that second one… it’s a freaking jigsaw puzzle…
Blob:
Too much red:
This one I don’t think is ugly per se, but it has got to be the laziest artwork ever. Even I could have made this, which is definitely saying something…
And there is one artwork I actually hate. It’s not ugly, but I hate it nonetheless. For years I thought this is what Larvitar looked like as a kid… So you can imagine my surprise when I saw the entire Larvitar in the anime.
man ive been thinking this for so long now, didnt really wanna go out and hate on it just to be the one contrarian douchebag, but most of the charizard arts this decade have been straight up goofy. the collector zard looks like a rabid dog. they used to illustrate him so fierce idk what happened. hope they stop the 5ban formula its so boring, just get rid of all of it and have the alternate art full art versions w creative freedom the only hyper rares
I really don’t like when the art style of the Pokemon doesn’t match the style of the background, that Burmy is a good example. Sugimori style artwork plopped in front of a realistic 3D background stock image = no.
Speaking of people who might might not call themselves illustrators, Hama-chan’s Slowking is up there with the best. That said, these cards are def some of my favourites.
Here’s a recent video by smpratte which also features this card in a binder, along with a bunch of other quirky cards. Perhaps you haven’t seen some of these either. So many great cards in that binder.
That exchange promo is so unique! I love the obscured handdrawn art from that era. Besides that, Exchange please has a holo back, which was a first. Also I believe it had a distribution in response to the electric soldier porygon episode.
I like some of the “ugly” cards featured or the kid-style artworks. Some of them have a wholesome charm to them. I also actually like the Rumble cards because they have a sense of personality that speaks to the day and age when 3D Pokemon started. They’re bad but they’re nostalgic for that reason. Unlike the crappy CGI/3D nowadays where it’s just lazy. Quality 3D work CAN be created, they just seem to choose not to.
Anyways, here’s my vote. I have to have it in my collection because… Well… Duh. But I wish I didn’t HAVE to own a Gyarados version of a flailing ugly caterpillar drowning and wishing for a quick demise:
