As mentioned above, they once graded cards like this as the Illustration Winner but then stopped when it was pointed out to them that the card was indistinguishable from a mass produced card.
Why does it suck to be him? He has the same exact card that many thousands of other people have, except he’s the lucky one that has a label that might convince some sucker to give him some decent money for it.
Well yeah, if he’s the kind of person who doesn’t mind “convincing some sucker” then I’m sure he’ll sell it eventually - just probably not for 200k. From his listing description it sounds like he’s well aware of the issues with the provenance so what he does with it from now on is up to him.
I’d be interested to know if the two other PSA 10 copies out there were graded without proof too, or whether they do have anything to back them up as winner copies.
I think you’re overthinking it. It is extremely unlikely any of the 3 copies that were graded by PSA are genuine or were submitted with additional proof other than the card itself. Unless compelling new information presents itself one day, there isn’t much to think about with this card.
Here’s a different way of looking at the emails. This is basically PSA admitting the trophy card cannot, will not and more importantly could never be distinguished from the Red/Green Gift set card. This invalidates any of the existing illustrator trophy labels out there and they should acknowledge this. They could assign the 3 certificates with the Red/Green Gift label on their site and offer the owners a free recasing of their mislabeled cards. There’s about 3 people I can think of who would have an issue with this though.
I mean they don’t actually give that reason, though I’m sure that’s the real reason. The problem is, how do errors like this get resolved in regards to their guarantee?
They are smart to not explicitly say they are the same because that admits fault. By no longer grading they will never have to pay out on insurance. By altering the label they could be forced to pay out 5 figures+ for a wrong label.
“If you are not sure about the new Poliwrath submissions, please, don’t grade them as Corocoro Illustration Contest.”
^ This was the only “hmm” part.
Yeah this was listed a few weeks ago (maybe for a slightly higher price? can’t remember) and there were no bites. I said then this card could get stuck in relist purgatory because the card is so damaged and I don’t remember the last time a mint example sold so there’s nothing to base it on if that makes sense.
My guess is if they graded a card a 1 and instead somehow slabbed it as a 10. Or any obvious grade differential like that. I’m assuming it’s just a generic stipulation their lawyers put in to cover their asses. Theoretically one would wonder if they could point to that as a catch all to avoid paying out on a theoretical grossly misgraded card e.g. a PSA 2 quality base 1st zard in a PSA 9 case. “That card is clearly nowhere near a 9, so this was a clerical error and the guarantee is void”. That is pure hypothetical speculation on my part.
I do have what I believe to be an inverse clerical error of this where the card is mint+ quality and somehow they slabbed it as a 1 with no visual defects. I assume it was meant to be a 10 and somehow was slabbed as a 1.
it is in very rough condition, but for a card with only 20 copies rewarded the buy it now price still seems low to me. Is this card not so popular or am I completely misjudging the price?
Yikes. Trying to add to my black star promo collection and come across this shill bid about to end on a Mewtwo #14…
Shill bid has currently upped the item to $50, seems to be ensuring their item meets the last few sale prices. This is for a Probstein123 sale for those curious.
A decent amount of copies have appeared privately and on obscure websites. But I’d have to agree with @theeucollector, it’s not that iconic and that card is badly damaged. I can’t imagine how you can work so hard to achieve such a card then treat it so poorly, even as a little kid.
I personally like the card and the history and while damaged the front is still visually appealing. They did drop the price from 1.1M ¥ last listing so if this fails to sell and they drop again will be hard to resist at this price point.
