I bought my Pokémon Fan winner Zorua for £39 back in 2010/2011, which was the same price all the cards were selling for - I think I bought mine from a listing that was £39 each or £300 for the set. The price didn’t budge at all until 2016, and it wasn’t really until late 2018 when these finally started gaining some traction - back then I think you could pick up PSA 10 copies for around £150-£200.
These were almost always available for sale on YJA and other Japanese auction sites up until early 2019 but supply has now finally dried up, which I believe is why we’re seeing such a price hike. I find it crazy that copies of the 2009 cards sell for only slightly higher than these, seeing as the 2010 set has significantly more copies in circulation.
Oh wow, that’s nuts. This market is crazy sometimes.
Do you know what the distribution was on these/how many were printed?
Official figures claim that winners received 100 of their design as a card. The same can be said for the 2009 contest and the 2015 art academy contest. However when they surfaced they almost always surfaced as full sets. Furthermore significantly fewer of the 2009 contest cards have surfaced.
I shared a post a few days back with some charts I’d made for an upcoming blog post: www.elitefourum.com/t/master-list-of-the-rarest-pokemon-cards/28390/52 .
