I don’t think so. This artwork was used on the packaging of the Base Set, they were used on all early promotional material and also English versions were printed. These cards and it’s art work all just spread out big rays of sunlight and nostalgia smell.
That’s not WotC’s fault. That’s MediaFactory’s fault for using different artwork for Base Set. WotC just copied the Japanese cards.
Also, I don’t think they messed that up. The Sugimori art is not as iconic for Charizard. The Sugimori art isn’t used on the boosterbox either. I a lot will been missed without Arita’s artwork for Charizard in Base Set.
The sugimori charizard features on the later print runs of base set boxes. Also the venusaur was the only one of the three to make it as an english card. I have to agree the three of these hit me right in the feels in terms of being nostalgic. The cd pack was actually the very first thing I purchased when I got back into collecting specifically for these three cards and the ones that featured in the gameboy tcg game.
I’ll post something new and something old. I’m a sucker for Eevee and Vulpix, so this recent art really got me! I also love Keiko Fukuyama’s art, so here’s a Vulpix with an apricorn!
I’m not a particular fan of Pachirisu and I’m not familiar with this set at all but I’ve seen this card a couple of times and the art really is striking, no pun intended.
