What makes me sad is that for a person who supposedly loves Pokemon so much, he knows barely anything in the trading hobby, and promoting the wrong stuff. I guess itâs all for the views really.
What made me throw up, was him saying on his channel he would âsell all his cards because these custom cards look so much betterâ. Resulting in his younger viewers dumping their cards for bulk pricing and people like him scooping them up. I wish he received a box full of shit every day just to remember himself what he is.
If I see what influence high profile Youtube âartistsâ got on youth here in the Netherlands, I wonât expect anything but the younger viewers leaving the hobby due to an ass like UL, making bullshit comments like this. Especially after he hyped up Battle Festa Pikachu just to dump his own stock for maximum profit.
Yeah, that honestly irritated me. His lasting effects on Battle Festa Pikachu is still present to this day. I vividly remember how it was $25 before he made that youtube video.
lasting effects? Before that video I saw them around 30$ and now I still see them around 30 - 35$ so not sure about him having that much of a âlasting effectâ. They are good looking pikachu cards though and those type of cards go up naturally anyway. Just look at the prices of previous yearsâ battle festa cards.
Sorry, I should have clarified. I was talking about last yearâs battle festa pikachu, the 2016 one. I was looking at purchasing one last year, and it was steadily posted on Yahoo Japan for $30-$40, $10 more than the previous battle festa probably because of the artwork and shorter print run. His video jumped the price to $100, overnight, and prices stayed that way permanently. Other people on this forum was confused at first too.
The other battle festa pikachus from what Iâve remembered simply dipped down in prices before his video, which was a reason why I simply waited for the 2016 version to go through its dip. The unfortunate short print run compounded with his video made me most likely have to pay x3-x4 of the price in the future.
Yeah Im in the same boat. Was thinking about buying it back then since it looks really nice and then the prices just started to skyrocket and now I dont want to pay that much for it.
Sucks
Not sure if itâs a joke, but if Iâll still truthfully answer your question!
Pokemon GO did have effect on prices, but the problem which everyone points to is that they believe there is a direct correlation between Pokemon GO and the TCG, when itâs most likely an indirect correlation. I.e. Pokemon GO declines in popularity, so will the collectibles market. This becomes a problem when someone simply states that since Pokemon GO is declining, so will the market prices of the Pokemon cards in general. Thatâs a dangerous assumption to every collector out there whoâs planning to wait longer to get a card that they want because cards are more tied to supply and demand market conditions than Pokemon GO, meaning regardless how bad Pokemon GO becomes, if no one is willing to sell their PSA 10 charizard, youâre screwed, you cannot buy one at a âcheap priceâ. Once again, no one said Pokemon GO had âabsolutely no effectâ on prices (Scott himself in his video said absolutely Pokemon Go had an effect on the market), but stating the other extreme, that Pokemon GOâs popularity will immediately affect prices positively or negatively is a dangerous mindset.
Pokemon GO did not tell the users to buy cards. They were not advertising âBUY WOTC ERA 1ST EDITION CARDS NOW! CHARIZARD 1ST BASE IS THE BESTâ. If they did actually do something like that, then yes, it may significantly affect the market since Niantic is directly telling its users to rush and buy Pokemon cards.
Youâre confusing Micro Level markets and Macro Level markets. What the dude did was on a Micro level in terms of completely raising the prices of one card by heavily over promoting it, saying itâs the ârarestâ card ever. Itâs like if some user heavily promoted some limited edition PS4 not sold in stores anymore, which skyrocketed the prices on ebay. Whereas the argument on a Macro level would be that when Sony discontinued the Sony Xperia video game cellphones, the Playstation video games and console sales will become catastrophic. Yes, while there may be a correlation between the two divisions, thereâs also a probable chance that a micro level issue that occurred in the company would not create macro level effects across the company.
Well to be fair, his 2M subs are specifically there to watch and hear his commentary on pokemon cards. People playing PK GO were doing so for numerous reasons: nostalgia, hype, AR newness, gaming interests, etcâŠ
Iâm just going to play devils advocate and say that I like him. Why, because he knows his demographic, children. My God son canât be more than 6 years old and his face lights up when I show him these vids because he wants to see the âThe funny man with robot music that plays when he pulls a good cardâ Is he for the serious collector? No; but heâs animated like that of the cards we so love to collect and I thinks thatâs why kids like him, but thatâs just me
Well sure he is entertaining for kids, but tbh thatâs the core of why he is distasteful. Why do I say that? Because this guy promotes custom cards to these 6 year old impressionable kids who see them and decide they want custom cards too without realizing that they are illegal and extremely regressive for the growth of the hobby. So you are saying you like a person who misleads kids into participating in an illegal practice? k
Not trying to be an a**, but if you like him BECAUSE his demographic is children, thatâs a pretty backwards sentiment imo
I never knew that it was illegal but I donât think one video is going to topple or disrupt the multi billion company that is Pokemon, and besides most of his vids are unboxings
Iâm not worried about it toppling the industry. Iâm worried about someone who kids look up to is making it seem normal to buy/sell/promote custom cards, which are at their core illegal (because of copyright infringement) and immoral.
Sure not every video is like this, but Unlistedleaf promotes these things regularly and kids donât know any better and that should be concerning, not encouraging.
