Take two

Share two cards by the same artist of the same pokemon.

Did they get it better the second time around?

Thought of these two instantly for whatever reason. I love both but the second time was 100% better!

I could do this all day~

Considering they’ve been made around the same time[1], and with roughly the same cave in the background, I’d consider them equal. :person_shrugging:

  1. Left one was in the Burning Shadows set (or Japanese Darkness that Consumes Light to go by first release), and the right one was a Burning Shadows Pre-release promo (this artwork hasn’t been released in Japanese) ↩︎

Three! Magikarp from Harada - I think the middle one is my favourite

Artist: Jiro Sasumo

Subject: Leafeon

First card was better IMO and my favorite special art of the entire SWSH era. Second Leafeon is also a pretty good card, my #3 favorite of the Terrastal Eeveeloution SARs (behind #1 Sylveon and #2 Umbreon)

Two dark slow kings, 20 years apart :

This pair encompasses the vintage vs modern debate for me

There’s a lot of great examples where they were done at the same time, eg. Fukada’s Gold Star Metagross and regular Metagross in Delta Species (which I think still hold as the best Metagross arts).

But I’ll choose one with a big time gap as I think that’s more interesting -

Before he lost it, and after he (kind of) lost it. One example of many.

There are a lot of illustrators who’ve made dozens of Pikachu cards, but I feel like Atsuko Nishida is one where the Pikachu and artwork are fairly different from one another, and spread out over loads of years/eras:

My favorite of these is defintely the center one of Expedition Base Set.

Hajime Kusajima has done 3 Koffings. I like the Expedition one the most.

Also did Weezing too :slightly_smiling_face:
I also prefer the Expedition Weezing the most

Yes, that’s more what I was thinking rather than cards released in the same set or deck

these are all about 20 years apart give or take

i know it’s different pokemon, but it’s the same sort of setting. there is an arita absol, but i think this is more interesting to compare

I just browsed through some illustrators cards alphabetically and selected some that are fairly far apart in terms of release dates:

I definitely like the first one more.

I definitely like the first one more here as well.

Hmm, I honestly like both of them, even though they’re fairly different in both pose and background.

I like the first one more again here.

Both are great.

I like the first one slightly more.

I like the last one slightly more than the first.

And mostly added as joke: Ken Sugimori artworks where the Pokémon is the exact same, but the background differs. I know there are loads of cards where there are actually differently posed Pokémon, but I thought it would be funny to use the exact same Pokémon stock images side-by-side on purpose:

Corporate needs you to find the difference between this picture and this picture, - They’re the same picture.

At least with some, they actually gave it some effort and made it into a fairly decent artwork.

  • For Heracross I defintely like the first one the most, with the Pinsir pincers in the foreground.
  • For Meowth I like the first one the most, executing its Pay Day attack.
  • For Sabrina’s Abra I like the second one the most for obvious reasons (more natural). I mostly added this comparison to show they sometimes play around with the sizes as well.
  • For Wingull I like the second one more. The first is basically a blurred irl photo, where the second is an actual cartoon (like Wingull itself), which is much more fitting for a TCG card artwork.
  • For Farfetch’d I like the first one the most. I appreciate the gentle gesture of putting its feet under the surface of the water.
  • For Bronzor, both artworks are pretty solid, but I like the second one more. Just like Farfetch’d, I appreciate the gentle effort of adding the reflection in the mirror.
  • For Ariados I like the first one more. Having more than one of the same Pokémon makes it nicer imo, even if they do use the exact same stock (it’s also why I like Ken Sugimori’s Neo Genesis Noctowl, where the stock image is re-used smaller and with glowing eyes in the background)

I wonder who (and how many different) people make the artworks using Ken Sugimori’s stock Pokémon PNGs.

Glad someone already mentioned Kouki Saitou’s Magikarp–Gyarados, which I also consider a connected artwork in my collection!

And for Mudkip, there are three artists:

Atsuko Nishida

Both are amazing artworks, but I like the second one better because of the yellow background.

Masakazu Fukuda

Again, both are nice artworks, but I prefer the first one.

Aya Kusube

Both are lovely artworks, but I like the second one better.

Cheers,
Adhi
