We attend Otakon every year as a group, for those who don’t know its an Anime/Otaku generation Convention on the east coast with around 30,000+ Attendees. Otakon 2015 we did Samurai Star Wars… (im the vader)
This year was Pokemon. Originally was supposed to be a cross between Monster Hunter & Pokemon, everyone had their own ideas so we are somewhat mismatched. Obliviously had to add GO into it as we are pretty big instinct players…
Will have some better pictures once we get settled, but caught quite a few on Insta as we were pretty popular Even received the coveted “Otakon your cosplay” given out by staff. Started quite a few gang wars between the 3 teams with the flag, was a ton of fun. Great convention for anyone around the area that hasn’t been!
Thanks! Yeah, the Jawa got lots of love last year as well. I am the Blastoise in the bottom pic. Sadly not enough pics of my shell (which took the longest and caused the rest to suffer!), but its similar to the shoulders with another larger globe with a water symbol and the LEDs pulse in a wave motion behind some diffusers.
Wow. I didn’t even see the LEDs until just now. That is so hardcore and I need to see more pics! You guys looks really great (both years!). It’s hard to really even choose a favorite costume because they are all so creative and detailed! (I meeeean…LEDs and diffusers though…how can anyone compete with that?). And then looking through Instagram, I found #Otakan2016 to be a rabbit hole of more awesomeness.
Outstanding cosplay, @joetehman! I’ve also heard nothing but excellent things about Otakon. Unfortunately, it’s an event my company (manga publisher) has never had the pleasure of participating in. We do exhibit at Anime Expo in Los Angeles each year. If you and your fellow cosplayers ever decided to attend that event, it would be great to meet you in person!
Thanks. Most common question that I don’t have an answer to. Usually watching some TV or working with friends when doing it, paint dry time, breaks etc so working time is hard to figure out, but maybe 40-50 hours of actual working time? Gyarados was probably 80-90 hours (he has a good amount of free time and skill)Scyther was probably around the same since he took a long time programming his wings, Venusaur was thrown together in a week so not many hours on that beside detail work & the removable flower shield on the back.
Really appreciate it! I haven’t been to AX yet, mainly due to traveling with large costumes on a plane can be scary. We talk about making it out to LA every year, the pure size of AX is incredible.
Yeah, AX is massive. The attendance this year was reported to be 100,000.
We’ve been an exhibitor since 2002, when the event drew 15,000 fans. And a colleague of mine attended the very first AX (then called “Anime Con”) in 1991, which drew just over 1,000 attendees.
