So That $54,300 1st Ed. Base Set Booster Box...

It’s not how I’d spend $50K

$50K into crypto could set this guy up for the rest of his life.

It gets to a certain price point where tangible collectibles just aren’t worth buying when you consider what else can be done with the money. The best returns in collectables happen at low price points.

It’s a bad investment relative to actual commodities, but good for him.

What are you guys talking about? That’s absolutely uncalled for…

We don’t even know the guy, why be so judgemental about it? $50k… That’s less than a lot of people spend on a car. Would you advise these people to spend their money more wisely?

I was genuinely curious what happened to the box and if the sale was confirmed so it was nice knowing the deal when smoothly and that it was done professionally. Whether the guy spends $5 or $50,000 or $5M on a booster box is none of my business really. @funmonkey54 was right about some of you people. Smh.

Personally if i bought this id be doing the same haha hell yeh id want everyone knowing that i own the most prestigious sealed box

If any of you are successful in life, you will quickly learn that the rest of the world has very strong opinions on how successful you’re allowed to be and what you can and cannot do with that success. They won’t care about you or what you do until they discover it, though, and the rules will vary between you and other people they have different opinions about.

For real… LOL

I didn’t expect this. We don’t even know his financial situation. If we were to listen to budget, we should stop buying any wotc product. Everything is overpriced. No more $20K Charizards guys, invest your money smartly!

does it matter

As if we are all arguing with budget. There’s a reason their username is budget :stuck_out_tongue:

We talk about cards DAILY like it is the stock market. The ups and downs, the economics of SUPPLY and DEMAND, the return, profit, etc. Whether you like it or not, collecting kind of is investing.

But as my teacher always said… A hobby is when your expenses always exceeds your revenues. If you have greater revenues than expenses, you aren’t in a hobby you are a business.

It’s both, but I don’t care if whenever I sell something I don’t get the same ROI as if I had invested my money more strategically. Or if some of my cards depreciate or just keep the same value.

Besides, none of us have a freaking clue how much this box or any Pokemon card or other collectable will be worth in the mid/long term so I think it’s stupid to call this a bad investment. Perhaps his box is worth the same $50k in 10 years or $500k you can’t tell me you know for certain.

He did say he’s buying into Pokemon from nostalgia like a lot of the new collectors/investors. I can pretty much guarantee you will see him open up some boxes and buy a few more cards, he’s not randomly buying this because someone told him it’s worth it. It’s an investment in the sense he will hold it and he realises it’s not worth it to open this box. He did not say this was the best investment ever and that it will be worth millions…

Consider this.

Scenario 1: Serious Pokemon collector buys the box for their private collection. No one really knows who they are. They have no need to show off their purchase because they are not interested in the attention. No one hears anything about who this person is or why they bought the box.

Scenario 2: Some guy loosely interested in the hobby buys the box. Maybe just sees the cards as an investment opportunity - no personal attachment to the item, just in it for the money. Has a surprisingly massive Youtube following, mostly of people who are not involved in Pokemon card collecting. Posts video picking up the box, has 200,000 people watch him buy the box 1 day after the video is posted.

You can be salty that someone who is not a true collector or whatever won the item. But please realize that by making this video, this guy has positively impacted the hobby more than the vast majority of people here on this forum ever will. This is how you get more people interested in collecting cards. Even if 0.05% of people who watch the video decide to get into the hobby (who weren’t already collecting), that’s 100 new people collecting 1 day after the video is released. If you care about this hobby at all, you should share this video to the ends of the earth.

One of the biggest flaws in this hobby are people who treat collecting as a binary concept.

Investing and participating in the market is the pragmatic side of collecting.

Assetics and emotion are the personal side of collecting.

Sure, I personally wouldn’t strategize the same way as this individual, but I also don’t do youtube full time. His ad revenue alone can absorb a 50k purchase comparable to most individuals in this hobby spending 1-5k annually.

Also, the term “investment” in pokemon is typically perceived as guaranteed profit. When in reality, the term investment doesn’t imply a guaranteed return; there is always risk. Sure, some investments are more conservative than others. However, quantifying the potential long term value on literally the rarest, most valuable, iconic, and historic box in the hobby is impossible. Even if we combine everyone’s experience and knowledge on this forum to form “Captain Pokemon”, we still wouldn’t know the answer.

It depends on how much I spent to make that $20K and how long it took me.

It’s all relative.

I’m not even considering new stuff, just WotC and 3rd Gen.

oh thats good lol.

thought you were getting new stuff.

captain pokemon to the rescue.

I did when I first dipped my toes in but I quickly cut my losses and got WotC stuff.

so errr now i dont get why youd advise against getting the best of the best.

this box gonna be 500k one day.

and when it does go for the price, and it will… you shall look back on this.

Same thing was said when it was going for 10k. for a very long time.

the thing is… it would be a great idea to just grab one big thing and sit on it then boooooooooooom. 500k profit. xD

The same thing is said, over and over again… YET there is one constant. THe price goes up, and up.

I know myself if i dont get one soon ill never be able to open one It already looks that way to me.

Somone can work for many moons on something, yet someone can just buy one of these and in 10 years theyll earn more then that person ever dreamed of making in an instant.

No matter how many times you try to say its stupid to invest in stuff thats seen growth ect, the numbers dont lie.

You yourself are getting wotc… so it makes no sense. but whatever… if you wanna sleep on it. Ill wait in the shadows and pounce on some idiot whos been living under a rock for 10 years and grab a box for 10k

just like that guy who opened like 5 shadowless boxes and sold it all for 1k

as humans, its in our nature to take advantage of others misfortunes and series of unfortunate events. Were such loving, respectful and kind breed of species.

I agree with all of this.

But that’s is in the vacuum of Pokemon.

Using your analogy, I think I can get to 500K quicker while spending less upfront.

But this is my personal situation.

yes sir i aM Known for my great circular reasoning methods.

The thing is… IT cant hurt to pull it off by buying the box. The oppottunity comes up very rarely. and the point is, the potential is so great, and its one thing saying you can get 500k quiker, but its another thing to actually be doing it and not everyone pozesses the skillset/prowesssss of people on this forum.

If he waits long enough, he doesnt need to put any effort in… his done it.

Ide say the best long term investment is base set.

I wouldnt say the guy made a bad decision. Ide say it was a great one.

i only wish i had 60k to destroy him

How’s it circular?

While WotC product is a good investment there’s better investments out there (not just in Pokemon).

I picked up my share of WotC product and I’m stopping with what I have because every time I go to buy a $500-$1000 card or box I know that there’s better ways for me to invest the money.

Deep down I buy Pokemon because I like the art lol

That’s all I’m saying.

The guy that bought this box didn’t make a bad decision but objectively… he could have done better for $50K.

There’s a difference between spending $5K a year and a life-changing amount of money like $50K on one box.
