Smudged 1st Edition Base Set Cards - Who Knows What?

I couldn’t think of a better place to ask this question.

For those of you who saw my post in collection additions you’ll know what I’m about to bring up, but for those who don’t I am here to see if there’s any information on smudged 1st edition stamps from the base set.

I recently read the article (by someone on these forums) explaining all the possible variations from the base set. Although there were plentiful, nothing was mentioned about this particular variation.

From what i’ve picked up so far, this “smudge” is only on electric type cards from the base set which I found extremely interesting. I noticed it on my Pikachu, Electabuzz, Electrode and Magnemite. I also noticed the lack of electric type cards in the base set :->

I’ve looked at these smudges under a magnifying glass and they are legit. Hard to spot at first but definitely there.

Does anyone know anything about these? Are they sought after? Is it only electric type?

Here is an example of my pikachu!

Thanks

nope not sought after, theres so many 1st ed base variants already; thick/thin/grey/ghost, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that actually cares about a slightly smudged stamp, but it seems you already found one

They are basically a waste but back in the 80s people bought Pet Rocks so you never know.

A collector of those particular Pokémon or all Base Sef variants, given their rarity, should definitely be willing to pay a premium!

Thanks for the replies. I have found someone who has taken a interest in Pikachu significantly more than the standard price.

I still beg the question where this is only specific to electric type Pokemon from the base set. If anyone has any information (or cards themselves) of smudges on different type cards from the base set i’d love to hear from you!

The ones I have and ones I’ve seen are all commons/uncommons. I personally consider them defects as opposed to errors.

Some may actually be turned off in this instance as the resale of it could be difficult with the general public potentially thinking it’s a fake stamp.

I wouldn’t want it at market price.

I have a couple smudged Base 1st holos. I suspect both came from the same sheet as they both came from the same original owner. I agree with @jkanly as I’d classify them as defects more than errors though. They are less desirable to me from a collectors standpoint, and I like that sort of thing.

Browsing through some older pictures last night I found this photo I took a couple years ago for our Voltorb collector. Thought I would share since it was relevant.

Damn that’s sweet. Smudge is way more significant than any of the ones I have! Thanks for sharing

Can anyone tell me what to do about my 1st edition blastoise card? What category would my stamp fall under? Thanks guys, hopefully someone reads this,

Also how do I upload a photo on here lol?

Upload to imgur, copy image URL (NOT page url) , click the little icon that looks like windows  theme, (found in post editor), paste the image url in the popup
