Yeah, I can’t imagine collecting cards that I don’t physically have in my possession. At that point, I might as well just download pictures of PSA 10s for free lol. Why do I need to own them? But if you still get joy out of them, then awesome!
It sounds like you have a collection that’s valuable enough to where it might make sense to fly over to the PWCC and physically take your cards back with you by plane. I’m assuming this would (or could) get around the import tax? If so, that’s what I would do.
Yeah I feel like with cards becoming more and more expensive, more people are setting their collections into safety deposit boxes or at off site locations. On one hand, you’re happy that the cards you love are appreciating, but at the same time you can’t enjoy them the same way anymore as its too risky to even hold them in your own hands in the comfort of your home. Pictures just cant compare to seeing the collection in person.
The only reason i have mine at home is because i live…literally, in the middle of nowhere, no one knows the actual value inside my Pokemon Room, most of the people think they are toys and valueless. I guess that might be the only favorable point of living in the last corner of Argentina, lol!
I really need to buy a safe, it’s been on my to-do list for so long. Sometimes I have a card or too displayed in a PSA stand, but only for a week max then it goes back in my parents’ safe (I have really cool parents) or one of my LionGoods cases.
One thing that temporarily satisfies the urge to look at my cards is creating presentation images using my scanner and Photoshop. It’s been quite rewarding to both create them and see the end product! Plus I keep copies on my phone so I can view them anytime I want.
I never felt the need to lock up or protect my old collection. My old collection and what I currently have are around the same value of of this moment. I had 20 WOTC & ex boxes, plus 500+ PSA 10 cards that were sent to pwcc. It never crossed my mind that a collection of that size and that value should need protection. Family and friends just laughed whenever they came over to visit. I’m sure these are a lot of reasons why most of us kept this hobby hidden. One of the things I like about Leonhart is that he made it okay to be a Man child (not the Jake Paul kind). I’m glad that he put himself out there and was a pioneer in that regard.
Coming back to current times, I had to get a safety deposit box at the bank to store most of cards. So many things have changed in this hobby and we simply have to adapt. Most of us are familiar with the EU/Netherlands theft, but there are dozens more stories like that. Recently, Card N All gaming from Youtube made a video saying his store was robbed (I believe at gunpoint) twice in one week. There was a facebook group that had her Yu Gi Binder Collection stolen. We had a very valuable binder collection stolen from an efour member. Hopefully this is something that is happening more frequently due to the pandemic and people being desperate. Hopefully all your collections are safe.
Yeah, unfortunately, one should guard their collection because there are curious eyes out there that might have very malicious intents.
Definitely good idea for those who live in areas prone to natural disasters as well.
The vault is very helpful for theft / flood / fire / etc. And also for mental anxiety and stress. As much as I would love to have every card next to me at all times, I have experienced cards lost due to flooding away during Hurricane Sandy, and fear targeted robberies will become more common due to rising values.
As for “What’s the difference between just owning a scan” – this was my hangup at first. I have found that the inner knowledge / awareness I can theoretically pick my cards up in person or have them shipped to me at any time has been enough to satisfy this concern and leads to a fuller sense of personal ownership. It also brings peace of mind when you begin have increasing anxiety over potential damage.
That said I do find it personally lacking compared to flipping through a binder at home. One day I would love to have the financial resources for an at-home vault type solution to double as a bomb shelter / panic room but that is far in the future.
Given all of the relevant variables, $1743 is still a good price for it, honestly. I would’ve put a higher snipe on it but it’s just a very low priority card for me. Based on the value of comparable cards, the Scyther should easily be $2500+.
was following the TRR exs that just ended, whoever snagged Moltres Ex for $1150 got a solid deal, $445 less than last sold we had. Scyther went for roughly $1750, +300 over last data we had, i guess price seems fair considering its only Pop35 and the pop of this particular ex increased only by 6 in the span of pretty much 2 entire years.
Zapdos pretty much selling for the same price as december - january. Not moving over $880.
Entei went from $887 to $1026. I was only following these 4 not sure if there were more.
To be fair, the fact that Moltres was ever worth more than Scyther was completely ridiculous. It has a significantly (30%+) larger pop than Scyther and is also less valuable raw than Scyther. $1700 for Scyther and $1150 for Moltres is still a slightly odd ratio, IMO. Scyther is a bottleneck PSA 10 for set collectors, whereas Moltres isn’t. If Scyther sold for $3000 and Moltres sold for $1150, I wouldn’t question it, honestly.
