Tracking 1999 Pokemon PSA 10 Base Set 1st Edition

THIS THREAD: UPDATED AS OF 10/21/2023
This thread tracks the latest sales for individual cards within the 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Base Set at PSA 10. I started tracking in 2021.

After significant pricing gain in 2020-2021 ($125k to $650k), there was a real retraction in 2022 ($425-450k). In 2023 we’ve found significant stability above $400k. In my personal belief, this is the new normal with growth from here. That’s an opinion folks…

PRIVATE SALES:

Thank you for putting this information together.

I also hope it remains its own thread.

I’m really liking the simplistic nature of this format, as well as it being based on base set 1st edition only.

This is a great example of a thread which should be on its own! A general question such as “where do you see 1st ed. base going in the future” should be posted in the Giant Market Thread, but we have several of these price breakdown threads (PokemonArgentina’s ex thread is another) and they’re very helpful to be separate threads.

I really like this form as well. Comments can be used to update the thread from time to time with new price points

PSA 10 1st edition Charmander is something I’ve been watching closely - I think there may be shilling going on. The fact that the price on the 17th was 650 now on the 26th jumped to $1,625 is insane. Feel like that’s super fishy, anyone else have a POV no this?

Yea, it looks like both auctions that went over 1k were shilled by the same person

@jeremypadawer ,

First of all Jeremy, great data! I keep track of this stuff closely as well. Let me add a few things here:

1 - Respectfully, I very much disagree with including the Unlimited version of the “1st edition” Machamp as part of the complete 1st edition Base Set. I know the set you purchased said it was a “104/102” and was counting both Machamps but I rolled my eyes at that, it was just a way to fluff up the number even more. The Machamp in question was not part of the first print run. It is an Unlimited card in every way - colors, the bold HP, the shadow, the copyright data. It’s just not part of the true 1st edition set. The only true “1st edition” Machamp is the Shadowless version - the Unlimited version is not *actually* 1st edition, it just has a stamp. The only true “extra” (non-error) card that should be considered a true part of 1st ed Base is the Red Cheeks Pikachu, making the set 103 cards.

2 - The Wartortle that you have listed at $2,300 actually sold for $1,500 according to someone on our forum. Sold listings through sites like flippertools.com are not accurate in some cases (keep an eye out for when an item has a “best offer” option but flippertools shows that the card sold for the buy it now price)

3 - Your Nidoking estimate is too high. This is another case in which the item was listed for $7,000 with a best offer option but flippertools shows a $7,000 sales price. It is very likely inaccurate. I would say a better estimate for this card is $4k (what the card sold for on a PWCC auction at the end of June).

4 - I think the Hitmonchan was too much of a bargain, the seller hadn’t quite adjusted to price increases and sold off the card too quickly. After that he learned his lesson and raised prices. Given the population of the Hitmonchan, I would estimate it would sell for at least $8k or so without much trouble. But this is simply an estimate on my part rather than official data.

5 - Your Computer Search $1,300 price is too high. You can get it on eBay Buy It Now right now for $800. Given the population of the card relative to other trainer cards with a similar population, the $1,300 price point does not make sense. Although I will say that I know someone ( @tobiasfrida ) paid over $900 for one in an auction that ended a couple of months ago and I believe Gary also recently sold a couple in the $700 range.

6 - I don’t really know what’s going on with the Charmander, there are a couple of recent auctions that ended around the $1,500 mark but this seems fishy to me, given that the card was consistently selling for $500-600 right before these auctions. I would wait for more data but at the moment I would not place an estimate of more than $600 for this card.

Your other data points look pretty good to me.

Also very curious to hear more about this lol.

I bought the Machamp today - 4.2k

Mid -May I paid 12k for a Blastoise I suspect that’s closer to 14k now.

And yeah I stole that Hitmonchan it should have gone for much more

although we don’t know for sure how many shadowless machamps are there in psa 10, but based on how many are available when you look on ebay vs the unlimited version, i would say the pop is in line with the rest of the holos in psa 10 - it’s probably more than 150, but i don’t think it’s 300 or 400. i think 4k is a pretty good spot.

Great thread @jeremypadawer ,. @hyruleguardian , is right, $800 is more accurate for a Computer search, Charmander is shilled for sure. I could add that i’ve personally paid $1800 for a Wartortle, $810 for a Devolution spray (Not on your list) and $1300 for a Dragonair (Not on your list). There are also plenty of valuable commons and uncommons you could add. But this should help with some of your data. Keep it up :+1:

Answering 1-6… and so great hearing from you!

  1. Understood. For the purposes of this analysis, red cheeks & both Machamps will be included, but also listed specifically so easily enough subtracted from total.

  2. Flipper Tools shows $2,299 as do my other online resources. I do want it to reflect accurate value if you can find otherwise.

  3. Flipper Tools shows $6,999 on this one as well. I do see the PWCC auction a week prior at $3,950. Will asterisk this one.

  4. Agreed. Will note.

  5. Understood that this could be an anomaly and will note.

  6. Agreed.

No. In the last week. But, I was made aware in the last 24 hours. So, I’m using my date of awareness as it’s all I can do to narrow down a specific date. Will update to reflect MONTH but not DAY.

Noted!

Flipper Tools and watchcount will not tell you the actual sale price if the seller offers to the buyer

Dragonair breaks $1,000 barrier. Noted. Added.

Jeremy - I feel these things can be taken for granted sometimes so a hearty thanks for keeping track of this on behalf of the community. Don’t be afraid to say uncle at some point if the updates become too much. Carrying the torch for any distance is helpful
