I agree 100%, the English sets look terrible. They really need to do away with the yellow border it makes the cards look like they were designed by a circus or sideshow, too much colour distracting from the actual art of the card.
I also collect the special boxes, have the Kanazawa, Toyoko, and Matchless Fighter boxes. Wanted to get the Silver Lance/ Shadow Rider box by the proxy service I used wasn’t able to order it.
Also agree, the booster boxes are slowly coming down in price. I don’t mind waiting for them as the market gets flooded with them.
Did they even announce another wave for these special boxes? Booster boxes will obviously be printed to demand but what’s the history with these special boxes?
Can anyone help me understand everything that is being released here? Am I missing anything:
Booster Box ~$100 for 30 packs
Special Box Set ~$500 for 60 packs, 1 promo Espeon and a various deck accessories
VMAX Special Set - ~$75 for 8 packs and 1 promo VMAX pack
Can the VMAX Set cards be attained from the regular packs? What about the holo energies that come with them?
I assume the Espeon promo can only be gotten from that special box but what else (cards specifically) is unique to that? It seems like it’d be better to just buy that specific promo card if the price makes sense and you don’t want the box and the accessories.
I’m just getting back into collecting again and after buying 1 booster, I think I’ll stick with Japanese. The quality is great. The borders are better. I prefer the 5 card packs. So thinking about trying to go for the whole set here.
Some of the VMAXs are exclusive to the VMAX Special Set, you can only get them in that single pack + the energies in that single pack in the middle of the box.
The reverse holo energies are afaik exclusive to the VMAX Special Set as well.
The 8 packs in the VMAX Special Set are just regular booster packs, they can contain any regular set card.
Espeon alt. art VMAX is exclusive to the Special Box Set. No other cards in the box however you get a deck box, sleeves and dividers but no other cards.
You are better off from purely a price perspective just picking those VMAX from the special set from eg. eBay individually.
I haven’t followed price trends on past special release Japanese exclusives. Is the Special Eevee Box likely to reduce in price as time goes on or is $400 a box here to stay?
I worry that this will never happen because the yellow border has become such a big part of the branding. I think the time to do this was many years ago and at this point unless there is a semi-reboot of the card game I feel like yellow is here to stay.
It definitely makes them look like toys, which I guess they literally are, but the more sophisticated gold and silver colored borders Japanese cards have always had are much nicer looking.
Gen 1 Eeveelutions didn’t get anything special during the Sun and Moon era (no rainbow rares, no hidden fates shiny vault, etc.), where the rest of the Eeveelutions did get that treatment.
And now Gen 1 is not getting any alt arts in Eevee Heroes.
Opened my two boxes just yet. I laughed when I opened the Gordie after all the memes on Discord, although I would have preferred to just buy it for 10 bucks and pull an Alt SR instead.
I’m happy with the Glaceon for sure, but one thing that is pretty annoying with my two boxes: the Eeveelutions V/Vmax are EXACTLY the same in both boxes… (If anyone wants to trade duplicates, lmk.)
Those saying the Flareon/Jolteon/Vapereon don’t have special art VMax. What about the VMax special set? They are each 1 of 4 with Espeon being the other (the one I got). They say SP4 so unless that means they are just a card from another set?
