The issue isn’t that you want to, everyone wants to. The issue is it’s unrealistic and not likely to happen at release. You can’t get Steam Siege for MSRP right now, why would you be able to get a foreign set that’s also the most desired set of the year so far for MSRP at release?
No need to be condescending here friend, I very much understand this concept. I was simply wondering when/if supply will be more available, given the intense demand, and expressing my frustration with the market situation. Have a lovely day.
Yes, and if everyone wants to, I don’t see the issue with wanting there to be enough product printed so that everyone DOES get to enjoy it upon release? What does a 5 year old, out of print English set have to do with this?
Who would have thought not wanting to pay scalper prices for an in print set would be received as such an entitled take.
It doesn’t have to go down to MSRP, but I would like to get all the alternate arts for under $300+ each. Judging by some early eBay listings out of Japan it’s going to cost a few grand to acquire all the alternate Vs and Vmax. Ouch.
I don’t want to give a false sense of security or hope but TPC and TPCi have drastically ramped up production especially with sets like Shining Fates since late last year. There will be a lot of Eevee Heroes coming out over the new few years on the English side. I believe Shiny Star V a Japanese set had at least 4 waves which is not common at all with Japanese sets but as we saw they continued to release because of the insane demand.
I wouldn’t take the prices of cards before they’ve officially released seriously. If they stay at these price after a few weeks then I’ll worry with you.
Yeah don’t go spending day one or week one prices for this stuff. There is a lot in of hype but once there are a lot of cards in circulation the price is going to drop off considerably . Don’t give in to FOMO because you won’t be missing out. These are not going to be hugely rare cards at the end of the day.
How is it an entitled take to assume that most people will be selling and buying this set at market value, which won’t be MSRP, at release?
The entitled take is expecting to get product for cheaper than the market value that is literally dictated by the people willing to pay that price. Why are you entitled to get it for less than it’s worth?
Give it 2 weeks (I am waiting about 6 weeks) after release date and single card prices will be realistic. Seeing the Umbreon VMAX on ebay for $800 is just stupid. No one should be buying that, wait until it is under $200.
@snowbellecity was saying that you and PkmnFlyingMaster were making it seem like @snowbellecity was acting entitled by saying they want to pay MSRP prices. They never called you entitled. But now you just called them entitled again.
It is not entitled to want to pay MSRP and not shell out $10+ for a modern pack of trading cards.
I suppose you could also say its very entitled of diabetes patients and people with severe allergies to want to pay reasonable prices for insulin and EpiPens considering how they are hundreds of times cheaper to manufacture than what they are sold for. Very selfish people!
Oh yes, paying fair prices for life saving medicine compared to paying MSRP (an arbitrary price) for a luxury good are basically the same thing.
It’s not entitled to want to pay MSRP, who wouldn’t want to pay less for something? What’s entitled is expecting to be able to get a product for less than it’s worth. Nobody is making you pay release price if you don’t want to.
There it is! Life saving drugs =/= children’s playing cards.
Real talk, I don’t understand why this is debated so frequently. It seems obvious that Base Set 1st Edition boxes are more than $100 because clearly a lot of people want them and there aren’t enough on the market to go around. S6a is also in very high demand and currently the amount out there is not enough to satisfy this. For stores, flippers, whoever has their hands on the boxes currently, money is the only motivator to sell. You can offer them less money and more enthusiasm than the other guy, but sellers don’t operate in that world. Since there are not enough boxes, people naturally are willing to pay more to secure theirs. It’s best to look at this as “market price” rather than “scalper price.” Yes, there is a self-perpetuating element in this wherein hyped up products attract more flippers and further separate retail price from market price, but what’s the alternative? A true collector test that you have to pass to be able to buy? Again, $ is the only motivator for sellers.
Of course I want to be able to buy the cards I want for $10, hell $0.01. There’s nothing wrong with wanting these cards. And yeah, I think Pokémon should be printing more of this to help people get it (which they have stated that they will) because this is not INTENDED to be a limited release. But for now, it is. And this is just reality.
the set will most likely be cheaper a while after release. I want to open it too, but this may be a good time to pick up other modern cards that you may be looking for that might drop in price with people going after Eevee Heroes.
I sometimes tell myself that capitalism is a necessary evil that is nowhere near perfect but its the best we can do and things could certainly be worse.
Then I go on my Pokemon card forum and bear witness to economics opinions so radical that even Milton Friedman would shudder from their extremity.
Sorry little Billy, the economics professors of the Pokemon forum have made it perfectly clear: you must pay $18 for this pack of Pokemon cards because that is simply the market price. Don’t be such an entitled brat.
Somehow this isn’t a promo set yet it has all these amazing artworks which makes it feel like an anniversary/high class/special type of set with homages to past sets(umbreon v max AA)
Absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to buy the singles but dang this is gonna be the most expensive modern set of all time I feel lol
Edit : Also, with so many newer releases having amazing artwork like these… I honestly don’t feel too bad anymore about certain cards I missed out on in the past. Although I’m sad that I missed out on a eevee fanclub among others cards(specifically because of artwork not because of rarity) before they got expensive, I don’t feel so bad anymore since I’ll be able to acquire cards like these eeveelution alternate arts. I do like collecting because of the chase but at the end of the day, I also like to just sit down and appreciate the artwork which is why I’m so excited about modern lately. It’s great that Pokemon has finally started to hit it out of the park again… because those early S/M days before the tag teams were terrible
Most if not all of the commenters have said that if Billy wants cards right this minute he has to pay FMV. However, an alternative was offered (time) that should Billy wait before making a purchase the FMV will lessen as TPC releases more waves of product. TPC has stated via official channels that there will be more Eevee Heroes so it’s not speculation that more product is coming.
When we were kids (I assume almost all of us were kids at the time), we had the ability to buy 1st Edition Packs for $4. For a short stretch there were some upcharges on Base packs, but that time passed quickly. We could buy any WotC era pack we wanted for $4. I don’t remember me or my parents ever having to pay more than $4 for a pack.
But today, what opportunity is there for a child to purchase a $4 pack? There isn’t. Try imagining your childhood happening right now, wanting to buy a pack of the latest set. But it’s $15. That’s more than twice your allowance, and your parents aren’t willing to spend that much on a silly card game. You’d be devastated, and you would have never gotten invested into this hobby which you’ve grown to love so much because you were never able to buy into it.
I’ve read several stories on this forum of people who could barely afford a pack as a kid, and they were overjoyed when their parents splurged for them and got them a couple packs on their birthday. Today, those kind of kids will not be able to enter the hobby at all.
But honestly, it’s more than just looking out for the kids: it’s also the really depressing state of the market. The modern corporation–Pokemon included–is a devious, cash-hoarding, slimy, human-hating, morally bankrupt organization that exists solely to make money at whatever ethical cost. I try my very best not to buy from corporations as much as possible (hence why I’ve spent less than $150 on modern Pokemon product over the past decade or so). People want Pokemon cards though, I get it–I have my temptations and splurges as well. But the fealty we seem to have for this consumer product is concerning and frankly quite sad. Watching videos of grown men spill into a Walmart and attack a trading card shelf like a pack of animals is depressing–that men would stoop so low to make a bit of a profit, and perhaps even sadder that some of them might need to stoop so low to meet their economic needs in our society. The worship of product and insatiable demand is definitely a worrisome matter. But then compouding it is this rigid defense of “the market”. Not only are we going to lap up this consumer product like dogs, but now we are going to make it so our fellow man cannot enjoy it or must pay dearly for it by selling it at three times the cost–and we are going to ferociously defend this practice! Who is even “winning” here at this point? The scalpers are losing because they are indignifying themselves, the buyers are losing by being so obsessed with consumption that they pay exorbitant prices for cardboard, and the kids are losing because they aren’t even able to get a couple packs to brighten up their week and get them engaged in the hobby. The only ones winning are the slimy corporations and retailers, as they are getting exactly what they want–cash. (But I suppose there will be karma for their greed in the end.)
I went on a bit of a tangent there, but it was a means of being able to fully address your question: 1st Edition Base has been out for 20+ years. It had its time, and we were able to enjoy it for a reasonable price back then, and I don’t believe there were any major consequences of the craze back then. The modern era is completely different situation, as it involves an adult obsession and the kids lose out and it isn’t healthy or happy for anybody except the slimeballs.
