Reducing Light Glare On Scanned Cards

Looking for some tips on how to reduce/get rid of the points of light reflecting off the case when scanning cards and give it more of a flat, lustreless, matte appearance. I have an Epson Perfection V370 scanner.

This is what I’m seeing now:

This is what I’d like to see:

are you scanning with the lid closed or open?

Open, but it’s the same result closed

do you have this issue when you scan without the sleeve over the slabs?

Yeah, same thing with or without the sleeve. I’ve messed around with the settings, turned the lights off, rotated the card on the bed, and the issue persists.

disclaimer: i’m just doing some general troubleshooting stuff here to help brainstorm and have no actual experience

it almost seems like a framerate issue where the camera is taking pictures on the same frame as the led flickering. idk if that is a thing or not.

have you tried scanning at a different resolution?

I’ll give that a try, thanks for the idea

The examples you gave were likely taken on a V600. I know that’s what myself and many others use. Maybe the V370 doesn’t have the same quality.

I’d recommend copying these settings to the best of your scanners capability and see if it helps.

Doesn’t seem to help. Might be stuck with the lights.

This, its just the difference in specs between the 370 and 600.

Okay, well good to know. Now I can stop struggling with the settings. Thank you

This is the answer. If you dont want the reflection you need a v600

Although the light remaining in the reflection is likely unable to be removed, you most certainly can improve the ‘flat, lustreless, matte appearance’ shown in the original scans.

If you adjust the levels and saturation you should get an improved image.

I don’t have an epson scanner to walk you through the process, but I imagine the scanning software is the same as in the link already provided for the v600.

So if you were on that screen, and pressed the preview button, I would think the histogram adjustment would populate with a black graph that looks like a mountain range.

What you want to do is adjust the sliders at the base to meet where the mountains begin.

You also want to increase the saturation levels until they accurately represent what the card shows in real life. The settings in that guide may be suitable enough.

You should be able to get a similar result to the following, which was achieved changing those two settings in photshop.

Thank you. This really helped to improve the image overall, and reduced reflected light.
