You are right. I was recently looking at my gym series 1st edition holo trainers in psa 10. These have jumped quite a bit too. Most less popular gym leaders such as giovanni, koga used to sell in psa 10 for 50-60 all day. now they are approaching 100. brock and misty are selling for 200+ and there is no supply!

i think woolsluk makes a good point. not sure if you understand the nature of selling. there are things people want to sell and online is a viable option, even for “large” transactions. there’s risk involved in anything you do. plenty of people doing deals in the thousands all day on ebay and ecommerce in general. it’s been around since the dawn of internet transactions and it’ll always be there. there’s enough mechanisms in place to go after people who continually commit fraud and cheat the system. you gotta be more optimistic man. don’t let your past gold dealing experiences become a filter that prevents you from seeing the other sides.

I was looking at Jungle Boxes and can’t swing a 1st edition. Ended up looking at Unlimited. I noticed last month there were sales in the 1500 range. Now 1800 is the cheapest and some going for 2000. I’m amazed at how fast these prices are jumping and every day there’s less supply cause people keep opening them.

When will people just stop opening boxes? It’s insane that 20 years later people aren’t treasuring them in the least!

I agree so much, it feels like people are doing this for the youtube hype. I understand that people are free to do as they wish with the products they buy with their own money. However, it does suck to see something you had been saving for (was putting away $200 a month to purchase a jungle 1st edition booster box) suddenly shoot up in price and the supply shrink rapidly with no chance of coming back

It’s all these “influencers” going for the quick YouTube buck. Fark them!

Just wait for a recession. This type of price increase in such a short amount of time is not stable.

It’s getting wild, the other day I was talking with my best friend who has no interest in the hobby. He told me that his recommended videos started showing “Authentic vintage old skool Pokemon unboxing MUST SEE $$$”

Yeah man that’s what I’m hoping for (a return to somewhat sane prices). Regardless, I think the price will rise somewhere above the old levels simply because so many boxes are being opened

In the month of August i’ve seen 65+ boxes be bought from closed down card shops. There’s plenty of hidden supply out theres - just gotta find it and capitalise while its hot.

I think you can’t blame anyone for doing what they want with what they buy. Be it on camera or off camera.
Now I must say I would find it incredibly difficult to open a WOTC box considering the price of them. But for some people that’s just chump change. Those people might think differently than me. They have the means to buy and open these boxes at will. Is it right, or wrong? That’s a matter of opinion and everyone has an opinion. To me, it’s not morally wrong, it’s not against the law, and it’s not hurting anyone.

Most people probably cherish the cards inside more than a box. They will probably send cards to get immortalized in a PSA Slab. Or maybe even some packs.
Also I’m sure some people are willing to open boxes that may not be in the best of shape. If I had a old beat up box that I got cheap, maybe I’d be willing to open it. The packs might still be in decent shape, and the cards too.
Different circumstances for different people.
As an “influencer” I’m going to show my purchase on camera, and it’s going to go on the shelf. I’m not spending 1500+ dollars and opening the packs. Besides with my luck I’d pull no holos or all my holo cards would be the same card LOL!
Now when I make the bucks on youtube to buy a box, and I feel like I can open the box, I’d be opening it for the joy and nostalgia of it. Not because I want to make quick youtube bucks. But that’s just me.
You know what influencers I lose respect for? Not the ones opening boxes and sleeving their cards, and sending them in for PSA, but the ones trashing the cards. The ones that have no respect for them at all, and are willing to destroy the cards for a quick youtube buck!

Anyways that’s just my opinion, and I respect everyone else’s opinion on the matter. I’ll hop off the soap box now. lol

There is definitely opportunity. I’m assuming people in a few months will be wanting a jungle box to return to its “sane” value at $2800. Supply is low and demand is very very high… I don’t think anyone should be giving a ton of blame to the youtubers who open their own product.

A recession will be bad news for collectables across the board, that should not be considered when looking at past current and future box prices though, if you’re holding off buying because you think box prices are naturally going to go back to the price they were pre-rise, you’re in for a bad time

Hobby’s/collectibles and entertainment hold up amazingly well during recessionary times.
Can any of you bright young people explain why?

If people are buying and holding onto boxes, I want to say the spike in prices will stay and be the new norm.

Collectables hold up really well because that nostalgia is always there. They don’t have a monetary value until someone is willing to pay it. Therefore it is true that they hold their value up incredibly well, its proven.

People want to take their minds off the hardship and misery. Entertainment will always be there to lift spirits.

Anything that doesn’t have cash flow won’t hold up well in a severe recession like 2008. Pokémon cards provide no way to support your family when unemployment is 10-20%… apart from selling them. I think anyone thinking high end Pokémon cards will hold up is extremely wishful thinking.
