I would say cars. I guess Jolteon would be an EV, Flareon a Ford Pinto (because they caught on fire often) and Vapreon a Jeep with a snorkel, since it can drive through a river

In my humble opinion, “beasts” is the safest nomenclature for them.
While morphologically, they (especially raikou) appear like big cats, we don’t know how they act behaviorally (I.e., are they more like canids)? Furthermore, are they like big cats and can roar (besides Entei, whose dex entry I believe confirms it), or are they unable to?
Best not to overthink these things about fantastical beasts, I suppose.

I’ll take @Quuador 's post as confirmation without any critical thought and claim total victory over cat heathens. “beast” blasphemers will not be tolerated in the Kingdom of Dog.
Creators said they were based on Lions, Tigers, Leopards but beast/dogs came out via the video game. It’s all make believe so they can be whatever you want them to be.
