In general if we want to talk about “same generation” and “similar” you cant get better then the evolution lines of the starters of each generation. Specifically the middle stages. or, the “awkward teen” stages of the starters. unfortunately they are constantly being outshined and often forgotten about sometimes, with there first and last evolution’s being much more memorable.
dragonite probably fills a similar role but he evolves/is found so late in the game, most people probably had a charizard with plenty of memories by then
beat me to it. First thing I think of. Why is dragonite this way when dratini and dragonair are blue anyhow? Design fail. Two orange dragons? Yeah sure.
I think not many people will think of Spearow or Fearow first when you ask them about Gen 1 bird Pokémon. The pidgey line however would quickly be named.
