Yeah but this seems a bit much, even for Pokémon. I get that it’s a prototype but the fact that it sells for more than all the trophies is kinda ridiculous
Not in my opinion mate, look at prototype cars, there was a record sale of a prototype playstation too a while back!
Regardless it just needs 2 people with deep pockets to determine the price, what other card can we say that for with this level of historical significance?
But yeah I get what you mean. I think there is less of a desire for prototypes in Pokemon than in other hobbies (judging by relatively tame prices for FPO, sample and matchprint cards). But when there is a market for it and both buyer and seller are happy, I’m happy too.
It’s difficult to imagine many 1970s/1980s folks interested in Pokemon collecting as a hobby, and easier to imagine them diversifying their portfolio with Pokemon.
As the market get’s bigger mate, perhaps you might see it become similar to other collectible hobbies, I imagine due to big cross collectors coming in and the market becoming more optimised
I think people coming into pokemon to diversify their portfolio is just inevitable man, it’s already happening! It isn’t a small affordable collectors niche hobby any more in my opinion. Wherever there is money to be made it will be made lol!
Based on the light research I have been doing into comics, baseball cards, and high end art as investments, they have all experienced similar events and didn’t exit without repercussions. Pokemon won’t be immune.
The copy that now sold has a white back and Galaxy Holofoil like the Base Set, so I would be willing to bet it’s someone within the Pokémon community that bought it instead of MTG.
I personally would also have been more interested in an MTG-backed version, but maybe the Galaxy Holofoil caused the main premium here. Regardless, after this 360k sale, the 250k asking prices of the other MTG-backed Protostoise versions doesn’t seem far-fetched anymore.
Having read most of the discussion in regards to the Protostoise, I’m surprised by some of the posts made by folks who seem offended at the now reality that the card could fetch a high price. But, here we are.
A lot of collectors had bought collections at very cheap prices and years later when they had become very expensive, lots of collectors have sold up and taken the money out of the hobby to buy a house etc which is completely normal and fine!
Well how has this collector acted differently from the long term investor in terms of impact on the market? Aside from of course having potentially more of an emotional attachment to the cards and maybe going into it not thinking about making a profit, but when a profit was realised how was the behaviour different?
Hehe I talked about it with some friends yesterday, im a clown. 360k does not make any sense at all to me when noone wanted to touch this card for years and now it sells for more then a first edition charizard in under a month. Okay lmao
Heritage verifies all the live bidders and the bids are legally binding obligations. I’m not sure $360k is worth their time for a suit but the ToS also says the following:
“In the event Buyer fails to pay any amounts due, Auctioneer reserves the right to sell the lot(s) securing the
invoice to any underbidders in the Auction that the lot(s) appeared, or at subsequent private or public sale, or
relist the lot(s) in a future auction conducted by Auctioneer. A defaulting Buyer agrees to pay for the
reasonable costs of resale (including a 15% seller’s commission, if consigned to an auction conducted by
Auctioneer). The defaulting Buyer is liable to pay any difference between his total original invoice for the
lot(s), plus any applicable interest, and the net proceeds for the lot(s) if sold at private sale or the subsequent
hammer price of the lot(s) less the 15% seller’s commissions, if sold at an Auctioneer’s auction”
I agree that highest offer was 8k, and even tho I knew this card was real from the start, the expose Travis gave to it doesn’t reflect the 360k. Still this is for the white back with the star holofoil, but still it’s very weird for a nitch card to jump like this. I’m happy cos it beated the crap orange lizard that it’s price makes no sense, but still it is very weird as no one could have expected this.
