Yeah, really something, all the “Top 10 most valuable cards!” will now include Protostoise. The MTG backed owners must be popping champagne. Just a wild moment for the hobby that signifies the strength of more niche historical items moving forward.
If I’m not mistaken this item is a 1 of 2 printed? Please correct me if I’m mistaken.
With only 1 ever graded, which other pokemon card with that historical significance has got that level of rarity i.e population 1 with extreme historical significance?
I’d rather have the Stoise if it were just for my personal collection and sales value was not a consideration. But I fully acknowledge that I’m a weirdo and that a hundred times more people would prefer the Charizard.
I remember when efour used to be reasonably accurate with pricing when pokemon was more niche - lots of 1990s with regular day jobs indulging in this hobby
Nowadays the top end of the hobby has changed to a new buyer field with wealthier 1970s/1980s who don’t participate here much.
When I look at our buy section, the average buying price has only moved up a bit and the quality of cards sought has candidly speaking dropped a lot; a lot on this forum are priced out + the cards are now held in more diverse hands too.
Still lots of knowledge here tho which remains an edge for those who engage here.
So much for the worry that the market could cool and possibly crash. That sale was out of the park. Enough of a shock that even if a couple other copies ever surface they will do little to dampen the prices for each.
