Do we have a good understanding of the quality yet? I haven’t personally gotten my order in from Pokémon Center yet. Wondering if it’s gonna be English printers go brrrr quality or not.
The one I got from the museum had a little whitening on one corner and was slightly offcentered top to bottom.
Even if the data breach was a massive issue at least the delivery from van gogh museum was super fast. Already got my postcards from Netherlands in Finland and these are indeed gorgeous. Still not worth to get your personal info info in wrong hands for them but at least the product is great.
I don’t disagree with your sentiments here but equally I think this runs the risk of underestimating both the impact of continued, prolonged supply and the impact that the modern stonk chase/flipping culture can have on driving down prices, even in light of massive demand. Prices have steadily crept down on eBay UK since release, with a number of listings selling today at <£40. While these listings certainly don’t reflect the average listing price, it shows willing sales at much lower price points even in the current atmosphere of bottlenecked availability. Additionally, people have demonstrated that they can have their fill with hugely popular releases in the past leading to a price stagnation once supply and demand reach a balancing point. Pika/Eevee Nagabas, illustrator Charizard, SDC/P all fit that bill. That said, Van Gogh Pika is a cut above all of those as you’ve pointed out, so I don’t believe for a second this card is going to behave in exactly the same way, but I do believe it’ll follow the same pattern. I think at its core, the trajectory is mostly going to hinge on the volume TPCi is going to pump out, and over what period of time.
I think it hinges on a lot of people moaning about scalpers but then have managed to get 2 or 3 cards themselves in their own collection.
So the number of cards matter but so does how many each person has managed to get. People will probably end up with at least one to sit on and I don’t know if I believe that the Pokemon company will print thousands more of these to devalue what people are holding on to.
I’m a big cynic though. The heat will drop from the company quite quickly once the next shiny thing comes out just as much as the market will start to level out with the price.
Also, i have to add that apparently these are slightly bigger than munch postcards and they don’t fit in my postcard binder pages because of that which is slightly annoying, would have been nice to store them next to each others but now these will have to go in my jumbo card binder instead in binder pages way too big for them
I would rather compare the Pikachu promo with the other “Recent” Pikachu Promo that was given out with a purchase. SDC was still a lottery.
Where Pikachu on the Ball and the Van Gogh Pikachu have basically the same premise(even factoring in the 2020 futsal release). That’s why I voted $20-$40.
The difference with Pikachu on the Ball is the original release made everyone think it was going to be incredibly difficult to get. They made no mention of the plan to have it come with purchases at all, so the price reflected that. Then when they announced it would come with purchases, the new price reflected that.
None of that has happened with this Pikachu. Pikachu on the Ball was arguably a bait and switch, the Van Gogh promo is exactly what they said it would be, we just have no idea how many they actually made.
I agree with you about the original release, but you have to take the time frame into account. The futsal release was 2020. Where the graph shown here starts with the re-release at the UK Game shops.
That graph doesn’t seem right. I bought two raw copies in March for $200 each, which was before the GAME announcement. I recall the price dropping like a rock as soon as that announcement was made, it definitely did not sustain a $200 price tag for several months after it being available at stores.
Hmm, that would surely be interesting to see another graph to see if price charting is wrong.
I actually graded one, got a 10, sold it, and the person did a chargeback because the price tanked so hard after it was released at GAME.
Anyway, regardless, I think the initial steep price of that card even at the $200 point was mostly due to the initial hype around people thinking it would be way more limited.
I think @pfm is right - the actual supply of this card is what’s going to tip it in either direction. At the moment it’s all just speculation.
I agree with @pfm . This card unlike SDC also appeals to those that just love Van Gogh and the art from this period. SDC appeals to Pokemon people…and maybe a stray postal worker or mail order person
You can see some sales prices for the Pikachu on the ball mentioned starting here:
The price chart graph is very high and also doesn’t include the £1000+ sales that happened before March 2022
I remember seeing those $1,000+ sales for Pikachu on the Ball. Wild times.
Now imagine if it were a rectangle, we’d be talking millions.
Just received an email from Van Gogh website regarding the print on demand paintings.
It said due to the overwhelming demand it is going to take maximum 90 days before the orders are shipped.
They want to finish all the existing orders before taking on any new orders.
They also come with a certificate of authenticity which is pretty nice.
Crazy that you were able to order a assumingly high quality painting with a certificate for less than the promo card.
I decided to wait to purchase the Giclee prints because of the website issues. When I next checked the site after they acknowledged and fixed the issues they were gone from the print on demand page. Guess I just have to wait a few months.
So I noticed this morning my pending transaction to Pokemon Center disappeared and is gone meaning they must have finally decided to cancel my order.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated. Trying to order anything last week was infuriating, I could only add one item at a time to checkout or else the sote would crash and no order went through except for the pins which was the main item I wanted. I was holding out hope until this morning.
Then the Van Gogh museum, same thing but on top of not being able to checkout properly, I kept receiving other peoples orders and personal information until everything was sold out and they shut it all down.
So no items, no promo and possible identity theft. 10/10
