if palworld’s creatures were this big of a difference, this thread wouldn’t even exist
I think if Pokemon came out in today’s age of the internet and Dragon Quest was a large IP like Pokemon is currently, then we’d be having the same conversation.
if so, it would be a pretty dumb conversation. this comparison feels more like “they’re both creating creatures on similar existing animals” like many palworld fans try to argue. i don’t see any direct ripping of models here. the best i can give you is some similar color schemes
there’s a pretty big difference

like i’ve mentioned before, palworld has plenty of unique creatures. all they had to do was do that for all of their creatures. its certainly possible that they just ended up with similar aesthetic attributes. however, it is hard to fathom the coincidences to this scale.
I don’t think a purple ball emitting gas or a stone monster with hands or even a purple rabbit with a horn is an existing animal though. Gamefreak has clearly done a better job at recreating while also drawing inspiration from Dragon Quest. Probably Dragon Quest may have done the same with something before them, I don’t know.
I do agree Palworld looks more of a copy and paste job. That’s not what I was meaning when I posted. Just to be clear I’m not pro Palworld and that I do think they are crossing the line big time. I also think Palworld is fun and will enjoy it while it lasts.
If Metazoo did a Palworld-like game (but with Cryptids), it would have been more successful.
No, it wouldn’t have.
Palworld is global. Metazoo are a niche in USA and non-existent elsewhere. The Palworld devs just wanted to make a good game, MZ founders just wanted to ride the TCG wave.
Probably my last update about numbers but this is a big jump!
12 million steam sales, 7 million Xbox players in under 2 weeks!
So, This guy went and reviwed every(?) pal.
I’m my opinion, some are WAY too freakin close. I literally saw the green bunny (Verdash) and though it was conderace, not realizing the colors were wrong, before he actually said it wasn’t the pokemon. I didn’t pay much attention to sword shield. BUT in general, I don’t think most or even a lot are total rips. Some are BLATANT rips though, so there’s gonna be some legal issues…
Also, I haven’t played Palworld, but I think I saw the catching of pals with some kind of capsul? I remember that in development of Red/Green, they were worried about stealing the concept of Ultra Man’s Capsule Monsters, so they changed them to pokeballs instead of capsules, and even then they were worried.
edit MHO on the whole thing: I do think that this is mostly competition for pokemon to create a more original game. They’ve been following the same formula for so long, that they’ve gotten comfortable and stale with the videogames (TCG are fine), and while this can’t de-throne PkMn, it will hopefully remind them that they’re not untouchable,
The worst designs are the ones that look the most ripped off - Cinderace clone, Serperior clone, Goodra clone.
But I would’ve loved Dignite (the ground tortoise thing) and Daydream (flying cosmic sheep) in Pokemon. They would not look out of place in the roster.
Chillet is awesome!
In 1 year Legends Arceus sold ~15 million.
Let that sink in
On the Switch. A single platform. Palworld is on 2 systems, and is on Game Pass.
I am excited to play Palworld once it becomes available outside Steam and Xbox though. My laptop might not be able to run it.
Don’t discount 25+ years of Pokémon brand recognition and loyalty as well as almost a year of AAA marketing campaigns
Palworld can naturally reach a larger audience, but anyone who wants to play Pokémon already owns a switch because that’s the only way to play the games. And, having been out for 2 years now, anyone who wanted to play Legends Arceus has had ample time to buy it.
Largest grossing multi media franchise is underselling a random IP that had almost 0 marketing beyond 1 reveal trailer 2 years back. It’s honestly impressive how many people are interested in this game
palworld is also half the price
there are a large number of people here (and in general) who play bootleg pokemon and refuse to buy a switch
Apparently Palworld has lost two thirds of its player base already. Interesting if true.
This is not isolated to Palworld. Almost all games (some exceptions) lose the majority of their players after a couple of weeks.
There are extreme cases such as Diablo, Valheim, etc. Where up to 80% of their playerbase leaves after a month.
Its very rare that a game maintains the hype for more than a month or two. Doesnt mean the game is bad, just that players moved to something else. Im sure itll kick back up if they continue to update it. It lasted longer than I had thought tbh
Oh i know its not entirely that rare for this to happen. Diablo 4’s endgame sucked and is a big reason why the decline was so sudden and steep. I haven’t played Palworld so Im wondering if the large decline is due to something similar as Diablo’s lackluster endgame driven decline.
