I played the game since launch. By now, I’ve cleared 95% of the content. So I can see why it’s dropped off as people are either done with the game or they’re just lurking until more content drops.

It’s the norm, I’m pretty sure.

I think most new apps lose like 50%+ of their users within a month.

In a turn of events, it seems that Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are suing the Palworld developer, Pocketpair.

There is also a twitter thread on the decision (in Japanese):

Why now? I get they can do it whenever they want, just odd they took so long.

My Royal Mail package arrived earlier than TPCi lawsuit against Palworld …

I imagine it takes time to build a case. They’re suing for financial damages

Maybe because they just won a big lawsuit against a chinese bootleg game that blatently used pokemon IP. So they may feel they know how to clearly win a suit and prevent a palworld sequel.

Well it’s time to make sure I have palworld backed up on a separate drive just in case. All I know is that I definitely enjoy playing it.

I’m following along this issue with the folks on Reddit. People are speculating it is not about character designs since that would fall under copyright. The lawsuit is about patent infringements. I don’t understand all the jargon but it might be about the mechanics of throwing objects and how that interacts with other stuff. I guess it’s about pokeball mechanics?

Nintendo probably has a solid patent case against Pocket Pair otherwise they wouldn’t pursue it. Some are speculating they took this long to bring forth the suit due to wanting more money from their sales but there have been many examples of Nintendo suing fan games without money being a focus.

Patent Abstracts:

To provide a game program, game system, game device, and game processing method that can cause a player character to perform various types of actions on a field in a virtual space. In a first mode, the aiming direction in the virtual space is determined based on a second operation input, and the player character is caused to fire an item that affects a field character arranged on a field in the virtual space in the aiming direction based on a third operation input, and in a second mode, the aiming direction is determined based on the second operation input, and the player character is caused to fire a combat character that engages in combat in the aiming direction based on the third operation input

The present invention relates to a game program, a game system, a game device, and a game processing method that perform processing on a character in a virtual space.

One configuration example of the game program of the present invention causes a computer of an information processing device to switch at least between a first mode and a second mode based on a first operation input, and in the first mode, causes the computer to determine an aiming direction in a virtual space based on a second operation input, and causes the player character to fire an item that affects a field character placed on a field in the virtual space in the aiming direction based on a third operation input, and when the item is fired at a location where the field character is placed, gives an effect associated with the item to the field character, and in the second mode, causes the computer to determine an aiming direction based on the second operation input, and causes the player character to fire a combat character that will engage in combat in the aiming direction based on the third operation input, and when the combat character is fired at a location where the field character is placed, starts a battle on the field between the field character and the combat character.

As described above, by switching between the first mode and the second mode, it is possible to cause the player character to perform a number of different types of actions, such as firing an item that affects a field character at a targeted field character on the field, and firing a combat character that engages in combat with the field character on the field, by inputting an operation to cause the player character to fire at a target on the field.

The items may include at least a capture item for capturing a field character. The computer may further be caused to perform a capture success determination as to whether or not the capture is successful when the capture item released in the first mode hits a field character, and may be caused to set the field character hit by the capture item to a state in which it is owned by the player when the capture success determination is positive.

As described above, the user can choose whether to capture a field character or to have the field character fight a combat character.

I’m not invested in this debate. I think Pal World is good competition for Pokemon, and hope that it will bring some much needed progress and innovation to the franchise (no guns, plz  ).
But, I recently learned that Pal World is a connected business partner of Sony… This checks out., and all of a sudden, Nintendo’s response seems much more like a defensive move than an offensive one. This video has some seriously well-seasoned meat to it. And Pal World was released internationally except in Japan…? Interesting. As Always, take everything on the internet worth a grain of salt.
