A fan-made DP remake on YT, can we please get this instead?

Imagine if GameFreak was actually still competent and still cared

Maybe you should apply for a job at GameFreak then and show them how it’s done because everyone is suddenly an expert on game development upon seeing this well-made concept trailer.

Funnily enough what I have been told, is that pretty much all the models in it were taken from existing Pokémon projects, including the buildings. So what point do you want to make?

People got a Sinnoh remake in the form of BDSP and an effort to make a ‘‘new’’ game in the form of Legends. You can’t please everybody so they went for this ‘best of both worlds’ approach. Maybe people should stop complaining too much.

People should lower their expectations. If TPC(i) hasn’t promised you anything, don’t go crazy when you don’t get what hasn’t been promised. That video game company doesn’t owe you anything.

For all we know, people could have been harrassing Game Freak staff with that concept video.

Highest-grossing media franchise ever produces sub-par RPGs for the past five years. The 8th generation moved to console and contained the same animations but less Pokemon than a game on handheld two generations prior. Compare Pokemon against a modern RPG like FFVII Remake. Compare it against a switch game like Breath of the Wild. Compare it against a modern switch RPG like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Compare it against a Pokemon console RPG from 15 years prior like XD: Gale of Darkness. There is no comparison. This is a franchise with all the money in the world that shovels out half-baked games that pale in contrast to not only its peers but RPGs from several generations prior. And the people who defend and purchase modern Pokemon titles are only ensuring that the low quality games will continue to be produced because there is no incentive not to.

All that being said–and in contradiction to my last sentence–I am actually very excited for what Pokemon Legends: Arceus will bring. A Pokemon game with what seems to be an inspired plot (it is set in the past, surely will deepen the franchise lore) which fully embraces open world gameplay and actually tries to innovate. I can only hope that they move beyond the turn-based fighting system as well.

There is room in the world for all types of art styles and games :slightly_frowning_face:

They should remake Diamond/Pearl in the original art style, but with Pokemon following them. Emerald and HGSS are the pinnacle of pokemon game design, everything else is a downgrade.

I hate the new 3D Pokemon games. Colosseum and XDGoD came out forever ago, but still look better than the modern takes on 3D Pokemon, especially in regards to battle animations

Both sets of games look fun to me. You will always have the originals you loved, and this chibi one being made by a different studio seems like a fine new run through to me, and a fun one for kids

Not liking or wanting it is fine, and your opinion is perfectly fine. It’s ok to not like things, but don’t be a jerk about the things you don’t like

Every single game you listed has had a multi-year development process. Game Freak is expected to pump out Pokemon games on a yearly basis, how are they ever going to be able to compete with games like that?

I get frustrated comparing games like Sword and Shield to some of the older games that had a lot more content in them. The reality is they’re overworked and on a tight schedule to get these games out, on top 3D games taking more work than the sprite based games they’re used to. The pacing of the games releases move the entire franchise cycle forward, so I don’t see TPC changing that schedule much.

I understand that it can be frustrating, but to say that they’re incompetent and don’t care is just ignorant. The gen 4 remakes are the first mainline games that TPC has trusted a different developer with. I would argue that that means they understand that they can’t continue on the way they have been and are willing to try something new. I understand that some people don’t like the gen 4 remakes, but we just as easily could have gotten gen 4 slapped into the SWSH engine with minimal effort.

Very well said, GF has always worked with a small team as well. People don’t understand the thousands of hours that goes into making a game to just be in a playable state, let alone polished. Plus with the Japanese work culture they probably work on these games for months with no days off.

The game timeline looked like this in the past:

1996 Red & Green
1998 Yellow
1999 Gold & Silver
2000 Crystal
2002 Ruby & Sapphire
2004 Emerald
2006 Diamond & Pearl
2008 Platinum
2010 Black & White

So it’s roughly every 4 years for a new generation and every 2 years for an enhancement within the same generation. If GF chooses to shorten the interval themselves now, then not having enough time is not a good excuse for not delivering top quality games as one of the most successful IP in the world.

Sword and Shield that’s apparently a ‘super terrible’ game, is the third best selling Pokémon video game ever:

That’s a fact and not an opinion. Clearly they’re doing something right I suppose? Did I miss something?

It’s only a minority within the community on the internet that apparently are the loudest.

In the end, you are (again) not obligated to buy the game if you don’t support the company.

It’s OK to not like something, but don’t be ignorant about it or shove your opinion in someone’s throat.

Note that I have not given my opinion about these games at all and I refuse to give my own opinion, because my opinion doesn’t matter in this discussion.

I’m actually really excited about the range of Pokémon games due to come out on Switch.

The Diamond/Pearl remakes as a game I missed first time around, Legends seems like a real attempt to address the chorus of ‘we want a Pokémon Breath of the Wild’, New Snap is bringing back probably the best ever Pokémon spinoff game, and there’s also a Detective Pikachu game in development to capitalise on the film and that side of the franchise.

That’s on top of the Switch already getting a mainline game plus DLC, a Pokémon Go style remake of probably the most nostalgic games in the series, and a Pokken and Mystery Dungeon title for those who enjoy fighting/roguelikes.

I don’t love every game in that list, but there’s definitely something for everyone!

In the last presidential election, the two top candidates received a record number of votes, over 70 million each, by the electorate. That must mean they are both really great, right?

Tens of millions of people eat McDonald’s every day. Must be because of their high quality food surely?

Sword & Shield sold so well because the Pokemon brand is still riding the incredible surge from Pokemon Go, and because the games are on a wildly hot console (which, again, does not mean the console itself is inherently great–just that it’s popular).

It is this “popular = good” mentality that has lead to the degeneration of modern art, and it lies in parallel with the idea that “whatever makes the most money = good”. Many companies are delving their resources into mobile games because of the widespread usage of cellphones, so these games sell well and can be made quickly, and it often leads to low quality games that–while “popular”–aren’t nearly as polished or engaging or memorable or enjoyable as a game that been given time and tender care and artistic devotion. All modern American buildings are ugly gray blocks because their sponsors have no drive for beauty but rather efficiency. Michael Vick–while he had many haters–was still wildly popular even after he electrocuted, hung, and beat several dogs to death. Because he was popular doesn’t mean he was a good person. The reason why things become popular is often because the “collective” (which I suppose you could say is what determines what is and isn’t popular) is both weak in its institutional power and easily influenced and manipulated by bureaucratic and corporate leaders, and also not as capable of critical thinking and analysis and appreciation of artistic nuances as the individual.

The argument of popularity is illegitimate because it holds no merit on its own. There are many reasons why a person or idea or product would be “popular”, but that does not mean it is because they are inherently good or quality or optimal.

I think you care too much about things that don’t matter.

I really liked swsh and I think bdsp are too faithful to the originals.

Legends Arceus is overhyped and people will be disappointed.

@milhouse, that comment is not constructive. Culture and entertainment matters.

I don’t see the issue with criticizing the concept for a game. Part of culture and other forms of entertainment is you discuss their good and bad with the hope that the creators in this take feedback and simply consider it.

Dismissing criticism with “why don’t you change it then” is simply foolish. We should encourage people to praise or criticize works of art based on their experiences and impressions. The best argument not to criticize these games is they have yet to be released.

When people starting buy a product simply because of association with a franchise instead product’s quality, it runs of risk of declining in quality. Star Wars is an example fresh in my memory. The recent Star Wars output lacks the creative genius by George Lucas, but Disney knows the formula for generating an income stream from a fan base.

Pokémon is not in a decline like Star Wars, but its important we judge the quality of the product instead of just buying it.

My ire was directed at a more imperative matter–and Pokemon is just an example of it–which that matter being the modern downfall of art, which has been propagated by the superficial and society-poisoning mentality that what the collective likes and what makes the most money is inherently good. Art isn’t just paintings and drawings–its our visual culture, and its beauty and themes and messages should be used to form a more perfect society. But modern art has been cheapened and subverted to do the very opposite: to lower our standards, to trade away quality for efficiency, to ignore beauty, to disregard meaningful messages, and embrace making money as our primary directive.
