Pokemon remakes are consistent. They honor the old game, but give it a refresh. Fire Red, Leaf Green, HGSS, Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. Honestly, they give a new perspective without replacing the OG.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl? Idk, nobody talked about it after release and barely since. It just seems like it died within a few months, which is unlike other Pokemon remakes. I was turned off by mandatory exp all. Didn’t even make it past the first gym.
I was disappointed in BDSP, honestly. DPP are my favorite Pokemon games and I was so excited for the remake, but seeing BDSP take the DP regression route instead of going for all of the updates that made Platinum so good was just disappointing. It felt rushed and unfinished, not new and fresh to me.
Mandatory exp all was actually nice though, I did like that part, haha.
I don’t put too much stock in my opinion as I barely played the game - I still plan to. What did you like about exp share? My concern was it may make the game too easy, which may not be the case.
I enjoyed one playthrough of BDSP, seeing a reimagined game in an “older” style did have some redeeming qualities. The Underground was lots of fun. More legendaries/Ramanas Park was also a cool thing, reminded me of HGSS in that regard. I would definitely agree that compared to all the other remakes BDSP is the least interesting and objectively the worst.
That being said, all the things I want from a remake (exploring a familiar region with better graphics, added lore, revitalizing old Pokemon and adding some new ones) were done leaps and bounds above my expectations in PLA. I suppose I understand the point of making BDSP: so Game Freak isn’t curtailed by the need to make PLA a “faithful” remake.
I still think PLA is the best Pokemon game ever made and I go back and play it much more than any other recently released game. If BDSP had to suck so Game Freak could make PLA as good as it is, I’m ok with that trade off.
Bold statement when I would wager the average consumer of mainline games in recent years cares less about the quality of the product than “oh my god new pokemanz game”.
Wasting money when they could play a Platinum romhack and get a better experience than a cashgrab would make me regard their opinion as rather lowly. I will agree with the previous poster that PLA was more like the real remake, on account of looking like it had actual thought put into production.
Have to take into account time that the games sold. Less people in the world, no online preorders, word got around a little slower. I wonder if the chart takes into account the amount of people that purchased the virtual console releases. I’m sure it would bump it up more if it doesn’t already.
The only thing units sold tells us is how much money Nintendo made, both you and I would have a hard time finding polls of favorite games where the top spots were not dominated by Platinum, Crystal, HGSS, Yellow, Emerald, and then others. Arguing two different things.
BDSP had a LOT of hype. Like, a lot. People LOVE gen 4. I’d love to start a new metric that crosses total sales with “perceived value for money”. BDSP sold a ton largely based on nostalgia alone, but I would guess it’s among the worst in terms of enjoyment
I didn’t have to spend so much time grinding up Pokemon individually and could focus on the more fun parts of gameplay for me- the underground (that was done beautifully, I loved it), the story, completing the Pokédex, etc.
There were parts that were fantastic (underground), but others that felt unfinished (Battle Area). I was expecting more Platinum elements with the Battle Frontier, but getting to post game to only find DP’s Battle Area was so disappointing, since Platinum’s Battle Frontier has been my favorite Pokemon post game yet.
